  • G400Max bug with Norton Antivirus

Just for everyones information I just hooked up my G400 Max. Everything went smooth but I noticed that when I would try to shut down or restart my Dell PII400 it wouldn't shutdown or restart. I would get a black screen with white vertical lines running up/down the monitor. I am using the most up to date drivers for the card also (5.30). I solved the problem as it turns out I have Norton antivirus set to check the floppy drive for viruses when I shutdown or restart and the Matrox wasn't liking that too much. I disabled the shutdown/restart check in Norton Antivirus and that fixed it. Other than that I'm pleased with my Max.

FWIW, I've stopped using anything Norton. In my office in the last year, we've had systems trashed (sometimes annoyingly, sometimes disastrously) by Norton InstallGuard, Norton Uninstaller and, we suspect, Norton AntiVirus 4.

I was using NAV5 at home with various configuration problems until my hard disk went bad. Subsequently I read that NAV has a reputation for trashing hard disks in the way mine experienced. Can't prove it was NAV's fault, but it was enough for me to ban Norton products until they get their act together.

Now I use Mijenix with occasional assist from Nuts and Bolts.

I use to use Norton for years until last year at my last company we had norton on all 2500 desktops and we were getting the strangest problems. 90% of the time removing Norton AV cured the problem. Norton is also a huge resource hog. That is why I know run antiviral toolkit pro. It is small, tiny footprint and usually the first out of the gates with detection for new virii. They have a nice demo you can try out at http://www.avp.ch.
