I think the register have misunderstood the fact that most of the main 3D video card manufacturers missed the deadline to have their 3D drivers tested and included in W2k. I think the cut off was prior to RC2. As a result, all the drivers on the W2k CD will be 2D only, 3D drivers will be got from the manufacturer.

    Paul.

this issue is so overblown it is funny. From VoodooExtreme:

More on Win2K and OpenGL 8:19 AM (your time) Dave "Octane" Morrison

The chumps (and I mean that in a good way) over at Ars Technica fired of an email to SGI to get the lowdown on the Windows 2000 and OpenGL fuzz thats been floating around. They basicly just put the smackdown on everything The Register says. Here's the juicy parts:
      - While SGI is under NDA for the Windows 2000 beta and cannot comment on its contents, we have every expectation that OpenGL support in Windows 2000 will be the same as support in NT 4 or Windows 98 today:

Microsoft ships OPENGL32.DLL (the link library), and IHVs ship the hardware drivers (ICDs) for their chips and boards. All major 3D graphics IHVs are OpenGL licensees and are continuing to put significant effort into their Windows OpenGL drivers. NDAed beta testers of Windows 2000 can check for OpenGL support by enabling an OpenGL screensaver.

      - SGI continues to do engineering work on the OpenGL driver development kit shipped from Microsoft to IHVs, and the 1.2 DDK is in beta with selected IHVs. In addition to the 1.2 features, it includes geometry path optimizations from Intel and other enhancements.

      - OpenGL 1.2 support is planned for a service pack after Windows 2000 ships, as we and Microsoft have both been saying for a long time.
      P4 2.53GHz, Intel D845PEBT2, 1GB Ram, G400 Max, Adaptec 19160 running, 2 Maxtor 18GB 10KRPM HD, Toshiba 40/10 SCSI DVD-Rom, Plextor 32/12/10 SCSI CD-RW, Seagate 80GB Barracuda IV, Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, Viewsonic G790 19" Monitor

Like I said... this is the same publication ("The Register") which reported that the recent eclipse was an Apple PR stunt. I logged in and 90% of the stuff there was either old news, misinformation, or plain crap.

Win2k has OpenGL. TRUST ME. I've used it for months now. Win2k is for all intents and purposes done, and there is just as much OpenGL in it as there was in NT4 - only it's faster and will play games.

What IS interesting is that otherwise respectable news sources (like Reactor Critical and others) have picked up the Register's load of crap and repeated it and expanded on it.

        This is all too funny.
