Black screen on Shutdown w/G400 32MB

Starting with a clean install of Win98SE, as soon as I install the video drivers (any version), the machine will not shut down or restart - it just goes to a black screen and I have to hit the reset button.

Using MSCONFIG, I've traced the problem to the line in my system.ini file that reads:
display.drv=pnpdisplay.drv (or something like that)

I've tried to work out the problem with ABS tech support, but they first sent me a new card (same problem), and are now sending me a new computer.

Here's some info about my system...
P3 550 (ABS computer)
IWill motherboard (got the 4in1 drivers)
Via chipset
G400 32 Dual-head
IDE1 -> DVD-ROM & CD-RW
IDE2 -> HD
128MB
SB Live! Value
19" Optiquest V95 monitor
Internal modem

The only thing I can remember from my IRQs is that the sound card & video card share IRQ 11, so I obviously need to change that. I know IRQ 3 is open, but all others are taken up (I'm planning to disable COM & LPT).

Aside from the IRQ thing, has anyone else seen this? What else would you suggest?

Well, as I see it, it hangs on your monitor, not the videocard or the computer...

Go into the advanced properties, tab monitor and uncheck the autodetection of the PnP monitors.

Reboot and see what it does.

No change. I couldn't get the box to stay checked after a lockup/reset.

If I change the display driver to VGA, shutdown/lockup/reset, I can do anything - it's definately something related to the video driver.

I'm home now, so I'll give more info on my system:

PowerDesk 5.30

DirectX 7.0

Nothing checked under PowerDesk Features

Under performance, Plgyn acc, device bitmaps caching, bus mastering, color mouse pointers thru hardware are checked.

Dual Head disabled (tho I want to hook this up to my TV at some point)

Okay, moved the soundcard to slot 4 (MB doc said slots 1 & 5 share an IRQ, I know slot 1 shouldn't be used). I also forced slot 4 to use IRQ 3. Still have the problem.

Now, here's what I have for IRQs:

Last second thoughts: Aside from the shutdown problem, the computer works fine.

Also, the line in the system.ini file that seems to be causing the problem is
display.drv=pnpdrvr.drv

This is a known problem with Win98. Some systems have a problem with the Win98 fast shut operations. Run msconfig and under the "General" tab select the "Advanved" button. Go down to the "Disable Fast shut down" box and put a check mark next to it. You can reach this program by going to Start-Run and typing 'msconfig'.

Sorry - should've mentioned this one first off. Disabling fast shutdown didn't help. I'm about to try a patch from Microsoft, but I don't expect it to help.

There is a Win98SE patch which is supposed to cure exactlz this proble, so I would rather have some limited trust in Microsoft in this particular case.

The microsoft patch didn't work.

I got things to work momentarily...

I went in to Properties->Settings->Advanced->Options and unchecked everything under Performance. I was able to shut down & reboot. I clicked them one at a time (rebooting between) and things worked until I checked Use Bus Mastering then the lockups started again.

So just uncheck Bus Mastering and go on your way, you say? Well, I can't uncheck it anymore. I uncheck it, click to reboot, lock up, restart, and it's checked when I go in again. I can't get it unchecked again. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling PD, but I still can't uncheck it.

Can I disable this some other way?

You DO NOT want to disable BusMastering. This will hack 30-50% off the performance of your card.

To turn it off for trouble shooting is one one thing, as long as you turn it back on...but to "turn it off, and go on yout way" is a bad thing....

Try this increase agp aperature size to either 128 or 256 mhz.Disable video bios shadow and play with read and write.
Get back and we'll try other options.

Well, still doesn't work. I could only increase the Aperature to 128k. I also disabled the video BIOS shadow.

Still locking up on shutdown.

I'm absolutely stumped here...

Check out your anti-virus program(if you have one)
Mine is pcCillin 6,that when it detected the Via chipset,added a line to Config.sys that didn't allow proper shutdown ie.system would freeze(discovered that in readme file)
See the monster post in this forum,turned out a program (Anti-virus type)from Gateway caused his computer to lock up>

It's not related to any anti-virus program. This happens with a clean install of Win98SE. If I only load the video driver, after I reboot to complete the installation, I can't shutdown or restart.
