Well working But yes, we've come to the same conclusion some time ago. That can always be the next step if Bixler can't get the Promise to work.

And personally I think the Promise is broken.

To answer Paulcs: The drive is backward compatible, and will still run on 7200rpm, but it will use ATA/33 for connection.

Follow this procedure, and do NOTHING Else until you report back. We're monitoring (while watching Sun Morn talk shows) so we can keep it going fairly quickly.

This is a process to clean out your registry.

Go to Control Panel/Add Remove Programs

Scroll down to Promise Ultra 66 Controller and highlight it.

Click on Add/remove

Keep your Promise floppy nearby.

Reboot.

When Windows finds new hardware, point Windows to your A: Drive as per earlier posts.

Install new drivers.

Reboot

Go to Control Panel/Device Manager/SCSI Controllers/Promise Ultra 66 and double click

Verify that you have the 6-25-99 driver date

STOP THERE AND REPORT BACK

I have one more process for you, but do this first and report back.

Info for Pauly and Jorden,

The Promise card is supposed to autodetect if it has the right cable for ATA66. If it doesn't it spirals down to ATA33 automatically. The card WILL support both types of connectors simultaneously.

So McRhea might want to check that by unplugging the cable from the Promise, check it, and plug it in again.

Ok, McRhea,,,here's the next step.

Connect your IDE cable that comes out of your CDROM to the empty connector on your Promise card.

Take careful notes about what connector on the mainboard that you are disconnecting from. You'll need to know later.

Reboot.

Go into your BIOS as you are rebooting, and disable both the primary and secondary IDE ports.

Reboot (probably automatic anyway).

Test.

Careful from here on---check all previous and following posts from your last visit.

IF you are still hanging. then do the following:

Go to Add/remove programs and Remove the Promise Controller,

(this is an edit)
DON't delete Promise controller from the Device manager.
(End of Edit)

Shut down, and turn the machine off

(this is an edit)
Use a different, standard IDE Cable (not the blue colored one!--probably available at Korean Radio Shack )Connect the IDE cable from your Hard drive (that is now on the Promise card) to the IDE connector that has always been empty on your mobo.

Connect your IDE cable from your CD Rom back to the connector it was originally hooked to on your Mobo.

Unplug the Promise card, and remove from the machine.

Reboot.

IMMEDIATELY UPON RESETTING! Go into your system BIOS while rebooting, and enable both Primary and secondary IDE.

Test.

At this point, your HDD will be running in a slower protocol, but it will at least isolate where the problem is and probably won't matter anyway .

Oh, HOLD IT !!!!

DON'T REMOVE THE PROMISE CARD FROM YOUR DEVICE MANAGER when the harddrive and all is still connected to the Promise card.

First enable both IDE connectors in the BIOS and plug the IDE cables into the mobo connectors.

Then go about to remove the Promise card as above !

Why?? Hmmm, complete Windows will either hang or crash if you remove ALL IDE-connectors
With the ones on the mobo disabled, and the Promise card not visible for Windows, the system has no connection to the HD nomore and will hang.

That depends, Bixler. I did it once for testing and it wrecked my swap-file. On the reboot it did find my IDE ports, but crashed right after that into alot of BSODs... Wasn't a funny day of testing that day

Hey McRhea:

I checked inside my machine, and it looks like your IDE Cable (the special heavier one now running from the HDD to the Promise Card) WILL NOT connect up to your main board. There's a blank on the connector as Jorden suspected. Be careful, and get a standard IDE cable before you try bypassing the Card and hooking up your Hard drive direct to the mainboard. You can try the first procedure before swapping cables. Just don't force anything and stay grounded.
