  • K7m+g400 I've tried everything

Well after 5 days and endless trying and failing, I've run empty on options. Everything works fine, in Windows 98 except that I'm writing this in 16 colors 640x480 on my 19inch using standard pci adapter cause when I install my Matrox drivers and reboot win98, it starts loading win98, but hard locks so I need to hit the reset switch.
I know the agp port works since my old TNT card worked fine. Well I've changed pci ports , Irq's, Voltage, installed win98 with only the video board, nothing helps. So Can it be my power supply? 250w Should I get a 300w?
Please give me some advice, do I need to sell my beloved g400-dual monitor ahhhhh.

Does that mean you have installed the AMD agp miniport drivers?

Are you quite sure that you have installed the AGP port driver?

If not click here to get the latest version from AMD.

Maybe this isnt much of a help but I've got a K7M and a G400 aswell and it works fine. Except for the fact that I had to force AGP2x but after that it worked flawlessly.

Even with out the AGP drivers you should atleast get it to work in some form..

How do you force agp 2x?
What kind of bios do you use for your board.
I flashed my bios to 1007, but it seemed to me to be the same bios a already had. There is no where in the bios I can set agp 1 or 2x and nowhere to assign vga irq. Is that normal?
          Thanks for responding

I don't ting forcing your AGP X2 is the solution. To asigne a IRQ you must go in the BIOS of the MOBO and change the seting to asigne IRQ to the VGA. This is very importent. What about AMD miniport drivers. You have installed them. After this you can go with sisoft to wach if your AGP is X2. But this is not a problem because if your AGP is X1 is because G400 don't ting that he can correcly work with X2. You can forced but your computer can be instable and you will not have a significant speed increase.
My concern is with growth. You must grow to become one, to become whole, to become sane. I am not going to force sanity upon you. Rather, I am going to bring out your insanity. When it is pulled out completely, throw into the wind, sanity will happen to you, you will grow. You will be transformated. That is the meaning of meditation

I've had matrox videocards as far as my PC career ;-) reaches back. And I am sure my PC is perfectly stable . I think somehow there is a bug with AGP detecting with the ASUS K7M. And as I said, it should work with or with out the AGP 2x nor did I say it was the solution. (read for once :-). But IF you want AGP2x it might be handy to force it. To do so download the registry hacks from the MURC site for powerdesk 5.

Forcing AGP2x wont do much for you right now since you can't even boot into Windows to do it. First things first, make sure your G400 is seated properly in the AGP slot. Then change your BIOS settings to "Assign IRQ to VGA". It should be located in the "Chipset Features" or something to that effect. Change the AGP Apperature to 128 or 256. Install the AGP miniport drivers and reboot. Load Windows in safe mode and make sure that you have uninstalled all of the previous drivers that you mave have had in there (ie. TNT drivers). Reboot again, and install the Matrox drivers, making sure that you are running DX6.1 or higher first (Please note that you should be installing the PD5.30 drivers if you are using DX7.) Reboot and see if that helps. Keep us posted!

P.S. I've heard that with the Athlon boards, a 300W power supply is recommended, but I don't think that's your problem right now.

Today I tried a g200 in my system, exactly the same thing happened. Must be a driver bug since the tnt works fine.

I doubt that it's a driver problem, being the G200 and G400 use totally different drivers.

Do you get problems with only your G400 in your system and using the AGP and BM drivers? You know all the problem this board has with IRQ sharing and it's PCI slots... It's also important that USB was enabled in your BIOS prior to installing windows.

Have you booted into safe mode [F8] and then > Device Manager > Display Adapters.
Do you have any other VC Drivers in there? Like the old TNT's?

Is your powersupply on the AMD-approved list? If not, that is a possible source of trouble. These processors are apparently sensitive to power quality. I would definitely get an approved power supply as a first step.

Looks like the power-supply might be your problem after all...try on another machine with diff P.S?
