  • If you’re all so clever sort this ….

None of the D3D games I have tried will work. They all lock up after the game opening and option screens i.e. just as the game becomes playable. The lock-up consists of a frozen screen – no distortion of any kind. The only way out is to power off or press the reset button. Ctrl-Alt-Del has no effect. Identical effect on Grand Touring, Toca 2, Star Wars games etc etc
I am convinced that it is some kind of hardware problem – either a faulty component or configuration – but what.

I have tried a clean install on a reformatted drive with no other add-in boards, or software installed - same problem. This is not a new problem it has always been like this, but absolutely no problems with 2d work. The DX diagnostic reports no problems and the software and hardware acceleration tests both run fine (the spinning cube).

I have tried backing off the display acceleration slider one notch – no difference.

set Aperture to 256 in the bios.
    try a larger power supply.
does it work with busmastering disabled?

Try newer drivers. They are probably more compatible with DirectX 7.

        How do I ..

see if IRQs are sharing under Win 98?
        Disable bus mastering?

Have already tried 256Mb aperture no difference.

Are there any newer drivers than those I have installed?

I have already tried previous versions of DirectX all with the same result.

There have been many new driver releases since 5.13, and you can get the latest on Matrox's site or here on the MURC.

As for checking your IRQ's, take this path:

          Start Menu>Programs>Accessories>System Information>Hardware Resources>IRQs

          I'm assuming you're using Windows 98.

Note that it is OK for your board to be sharing an IRQ with "IRQ Holder for PCI Steering." If it is sharing with something like your soundcard or another device, then this could be a sign (and cause) of trouble.

Have now tried disabling bus mastering makes no difference.

Re: IRQ's it is using IRQ 11 which is also shared with PCI steering (twice!) and my "PCI modem enumerator".
I dont have any free IRQ's. There is at leats one device on all of them 1 through to 15.

Have moved IRQ's around by forcing IRQ 9 on slot one. This left just the G200 and PCI steering on 11.

Still makes no difference - complete lock-up !!

                Hi Hank,

                1.Download Matrox Uninstaller http://www.murc.ws/driver/Win9x/PD5/un_513.zip

                2.Download Powerdesk 5.3 http://www.murc.ws/Driver/Win9x/PD5/w9x_530.exe

3.Boot to safe mode. Check "Start->Settings->Control Panel->System->Device Manager->Display adapters" for any drivers other than your Matrox card. Delete any that you find.

4.Run the uninstaller. When it reboots set your video driver up as PCI VGA Adapter.

                5.Reboot again.

                6.Run the PD5.3 Setup.

leave your G200 on IRQ 11 with PCI steering, this is OK , what sound card you have ? ....sometimes they can make lockups too...install latest drivers for G200 on matrox site, but use uninstaller util to uninstal older one , then instal new drivers & DX7...ahhh yes be sure that nothing runs in sys.try like antivirus , getright or some weerd utills or tweekers..

Thankyou to all who have posted ....

                    I have a Soundblaster awe64 value.

I have tried a new build without the awe64 in the case on a fresh install of win 98 and still have the same problem.

I have been using the matrox uninstaller to remove the old drivers.

Whilst I dont now have the most recent drivers I did have them in the past (those at the time) with whatever was the most recent version of DX at the time - still had the same problem.

I still think that this is a config problem of some sort ??

Have you tried to remove all other cards from your computer (modem, soundcard etc.)?

                      Does it work then?

                      Micko,

Yes I have tried removing all the other cards and it still does the same thing.

I have considered that the card may be faulty but I don't want to fork out for a new one and find I still have the same problem.

                            Hi Hank...

Perhaps you could try the card in your friends machine or something like that
Then you would if it is a config problem or your G200....
