So what does this mean to us matrox owners? Do you think that matrox will incorporate glide support in the drivers now? That would be very nice, full directx7 support, a kick butt opengl icd and glide support. yummy! Heres a link to the story. http://mktnews.nasdaq.com/newsv2/pul...=&companyname=

JOY!!! 2 senerios's for this one:
1) People start viewing Glide as dead and no one supports it. Unlikely in my opinion, since Glide is supposed to be very efficient and easy to program for.
2) Everyone supports it and we become one big happy gaming community. There are a lot of Glide programmers out there wo learned 3D gaming on Glide. This could really open up Glide as a premier 3D API, instead of a has been, expecially since it is open source (easy Linux port anyone?).
Only time will tell though.

Umm, no they won't. They just OS'ed it.
And Jammrock, there are already GLide libraries on Linux for the 3Dfx cards, so I hope other conversions are soon to follow.

3DFX's contention all along was that it really didn't make sense for other architectures to try to use an API designed specifically for their hardware. We'll see how true this is. I think this move is more about getting Glide onto alternative operating sytems for free by the hacker community than any concerns about rivals using it. Since Mesa/OGL hasn't really gone anywhere on Linux, maybe it will take Glide to get games really rolling on that OS.

"maybe it will take Glide to get games really rolling on that OS."
Or maybe the gaming industry to start releasing titles for it. With the release of q3arena and UT on Linux, this is a litmus test to see how much $$$ game companies can make on this platform. I suggest that anyone who supports linux or wants to support linux or is thinking of supporting linux, buy the linux ver. of q3arena, and email gt interactive and tell them I WANT UT FOR LINUX ON CD!Asus K7V

Himself,
OGL on Linux is rolling along quite well, actually. As is GLX. Last I checked, Q3 ran better on a G400 on Linux than it does in Windows (in many resolutions, like 800x600).Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw.
