  • One bad Move!

Just got my new G400 DH in (was back ordered 3 weeks) Ha dsold my TnT four weeks ago and had an old 1 meg PCI card that I happily replaced with the G400.

Install the new drivers 5.41 after wiping out any trace of the old video card drivers from the Reg. and installing the Regular VGA
microssoft ones. Everything is great started
    doing some benchmarks in Q2.

I notice that the 640 x 480 scores are fluctuating by 5 - 10 frames so I get the smart idea to fresh re-install the lates AMD AGP miniport drivers for my Gigabyte Athlon
board. See I had originally installed them before with my TnT a month ago.

Anything 3D now freezes after 3 secs into it! I moves the G400 from IRQ to IRQ. I re-installed the drivers 5.41 three times. I reinstalled DX7. Forget it! Whatever that AMD AGP Miniport driver did, it screwed me good.

I just checked out PCI list program and My AGP read 2x, sidebanding is ON, AGP pipeline is ON.

Please kick me in the Butt hard and spank me!

Buy Low end and overclock it on the high end!

Well I couldn't believe it but like I read here before something on my card was not making good contact in the AGP slot.

I jumped to conclusions about the AMd AGP drivers. Must of been ready to go and pure coincidence. I loosened the screw on the G400
bracket and loosened up yhe slot.

Everything works fine except I feel I can't screw my card in solidly now.

What do you suggest? I read something about bending the bracket or buying a plastic holder?

I don't understand though. The card seemed to be firmly in at all edges. Is this a manufacturing defect?

You will have to bend the top tab on the card bracket. Do a search on this site and and you will find the appropriate thread complete with diagrams. This is a function of less than precision manufacturing on the part of both case and mobo manufacturers.

        Here ya go

Here's what I think is happening with some cases/mother boards.

Paul, now if your illistration shown the card tilting in the other direction then that's what mine has a tendency of doing! This is not a defect with my Max but rather with the Inwin Q500's removable backplate not being true and square.

On the other hand, I have noticed that some of the G400's the mounting problems are due to the mounting screw hole not being deep enough. With my A500's the bending is required as you've mentioned. Not 100% sure whether this is a problem with the G400 or poorly made cases (I'm leaning toward a combination of both) and my Q500 removable backplate won't even mount correctly to the case...

Depending on your case, you should be able to adjust the whole back bracket to allow for a better fit with the tops of cards. I have had to do that several times with various cases, the height of the top of the bracket being too removed from the motherboard.

You are right on the money with that one!!! I ended up making a teflon spacer for mine...but this happened with EVERY mobo I have had my Max attached to...was fine, until I tightened down the retaining screw...then the pressure would like the front edge out of the AGP slot....making the spacer fixed all....I was going to bend it but hate to bend anything adjacent to PCBs...don't want to stress them...
Just wanted to say Good Job on the explaination and the graphics...

Or stick a washer(or washers) between the case and the video card hold down. If it isn't improperly alinged, just not making proper contact in the AGP slot, this can make it fit better. If you have pulled the card out and put it back alot or swapped card a lot, the AGP slot can get loose. This washer solution can make the card and the slot come in contact further up in the slot. Might help, might not, but here it is anyway.
