  • Asus+K7+G400M conflict !

I have a serius problem with my newly
    (soon f--king trasched)

    G400 Max, ASUS K7M, Atholn 700mhz system.
The system is equiped with 256 mb of PC100 RAM, floppy and HD.
(I do have other components but this fault
happens as soon I mount the G400
    (the first thing I do)).

I've have W95B, installed USB, VIA IDE drivers, VIA APM fix, AGP drivers
    supplied on the asus cd
    (can't find any newer),
latest drivers for G400, lastest official bios km1007 for the mb, 100 mhz FSB. Can't find any agp divider function/setting (automatic on K7???)

Graphic Aperture Size: tested 32 to 512 mb
(removed card in "my computer panel",
    changed setting, rebooted etc
    same result all the time)

The problem is that the card have three memory conflicts with
    "PCI standard PCI-to-PCI".

Some times when I boot up the
screen turns black, i reboot 1 to 3 times again and the systems pops up correct.
When started the card seems to working (haven't "sysmarked it") when playing
    unreal, driver etc etc etc..

When I trie to install a intel pro 10/100+ ethernet card the screens goes black instead
for winlogon. Safe mode reboot works but
if I remove card, reboot, install card,
reboot, the result is the same. If I remove
intel card the system is "ok"
    (but not really).

The intel and g400 have been working (but still in conflict) in an erlier installation
on the same computer. I do have formated the
"new" hd and so on etc.

    ANY suggestion is wanted !

Have tried safe mode, fast mode settings in
bios without any diffrent result. I do think
the problem with the G400 card is related to
the "PCI..." falut, but how to fix that ??

PCI list indicates AGP1, bus mastering.
Forcing AGP2 with regkeys doesn't work.

    Heelp wanted !!!!

    Yours

      OK

      04 Com1
      05 "IRQ holder for PCI"
      06 Floppy
      07 LPT1
      08 "System CMOS...."
      09 "IRQ holder for PCI"
      10 VIA tech USB
      11 "IRQ holder for PCI"
      11 Matrox G400
      12 mouse
      13 Mathprocessor
      14 VIA bus IDE
      15 VIA bus IDE

Their could be an conflict ??
But how do I isolate the IRQ's for the
AGP port ?? The asus mb seems to be hard
to dedicate an iq to a specific port. I
can lock certain IRQ's but if I do, the MB
select another irq for the G400. When I have
      more components in the machine
"IRQ holder for PCI" sharings seems not 2
      be an problem.

          Yepp!

          I solved the problem (almost)!
I got an copy of w98 second edition and
          did something like this:

My system was when installing this

          Asus, bios km1007
          G400 max, bios "1.5 - 22"??
          Athlon 700 mhz proceessor
          HD+floppy
          256 mb ram
Left out all my other components

          formated C
          installed w98b - reboot etc.
let my graphics card 2 be standard pci vga
          installed miniport drivers
installed VIA drivers fix from asus site
          installed AMD-756 Peripheral Bus Controller
VIA chipset setup from asus cd
          reboot
install new drives for the video card (latest) amd reboot once more.

No conflict whats so ever !!!!!

Installed my other components and still
no problem execpt that the matrox
          properties dosn't appear on the
          proprtypage for the "desktop??"
          Any ideas 4 that ?

But im still happy for the other
problems 2 go away. Maybie it will
          work for w95b 2 but I wont trie !

          happy xmas !

In Win98, the Matrox properties are hiding behind the "Advanced" button on the settings tab of the display properties. Microsoft decided to hide all of the vendor specific pages here in win98, where they were plainly visible with w95.

I haven't every tried to install w95 on my k7m/athlon/g400. I've got w98 (not se), and I had to force the agp2x with registry hack to work with cold bootups. Other than that, everything works beautifully.
