  • DVD playback trouble

I recently purchased the Marvel G400. I am using an AMD K6-2 366, with 128 mb RAM. Playback is jerky and I don't know why. I have used the ATI All-In-Wonder for DVD playback and that was great. Any help here would be appreciated.
    Thank you

How is the card in other uses (games)? Is bus-mastering enabled on the G400? Is DMA mode enabled on your DVD drive? Do you have the latest motherboard drivers installed?

Maybe you are just seeing the difference between hardware-assisted DVD playback (the ATI card) and software-only (G400).

Are you using the Cinemaster-based Matrox DVD player from the G400 CD, right? Cinemaster is supposed to be the fastest software player.

The G400 has partial hardware assistance in tis playback of DVDs. CHeck to see if you are not sharing IRQs.

I think you will find that your Processor isn't fast enough. I had a K6-2/350, I had to over clock it to 400 to get smooth playback.

The G400 doesn't have dvd hardware assist.

"The G400 has partial hardware assistance in tis playback of DVDs."

That's the first i have heard of it.

If you are using a K6-2 you could give it a bit of an overclock. 366 is a speed i haven't come across on those chips. If you are running at 5.5*66mhz you may be better of running at 5*75 (375) 3.5*100 (350) 4*95 380). The higher fsb speed may give you a smoother playback as the memory and cache are working that much harder.

Play around with the settings in dvd genie. Software players tend to not be too keen on cpu speeds below 400. I tried a all in wonder on a 300 clocked to 333 and the playback was not acceptable until i reduced the sound quality.

I agree with the others, your processor is border line for DVD playback. The minimum recommended is a PII 300 and other compagnies are asking for a PII 350 for the same software... so with your celeron 366... can't expect it to be perfect.

The G400 does have hardware assist for DVD playback. It's called Motion Compensation and does part of the MPEG decoding through the hardware rather than the CPU doing it.

Just out of interest, psych, is there a
way to check that Motion Comp. is actually
                      being used?
