Full screen DOS window hangs system

When I Alt-Enter a DOS window to maximise it my monitor goes into standby mode and nothing will bring it back (I presume my system has hung). I guess it's not a monitor fault as I've had 2 now (Iiyama 22" 510 Pro).
G400 DH 32MB (not max) / Athlon650 / MSI6167 / Win98 SE.
Anyone else seen this?

maybe you need to install the Vbext.exe ...

it comes with the bios, just double-click the install.exe to get support for DOS modes.
