  • G400 Lockups, Plz help!!!

    Okay,

I managed to get Kingpin & Half Life working in OpenGL mode on my Matrox
G400 by re-installing the 5.41 drivers. But I am still experiencing lockups
and freezes. They tend to be random as they can happen anytime. Usually,
there is still sound flowing in the background.

    Heres what I've tried:
Moving the card to the furthest PCI slot from the AGP slot (Only solves
garbled graphics freeze up on the Windows 98 Desktop)
Setting AGP Fallback To '0' in the Registry.
    Disabling Force AGP 2x
    Disabling Dual Head

Other than that, the games works fine. I've got Bus Mastering Enabled.
That is proberbly the source of this problem but if I have it disabled then
OpenGL games will NOT WORK! Majority of them causes a General Protection
fault at start up. So I have to have Bus Mastering Enabled in Order to
start them up in OpenGL mode. D3D games lock up when Bus Mastering is
    enabled.

I need help on running Games Like Kingpin & Half Life in OpenGL with Bus
    Mastering Disabled!
Anyone managed to get Kingpin & HalfLife running with out having Bus
    Mastering Enabled?? Is that possible?

could this be the problem with Win 98 SE!!

If anyone has any ideas, please e-mail me below!!

Also, which IRQ is your Matrox using? and SB Live if you've got one!

    Here are my specs:
    PII 338Mhz (Overclocked from 300)
Matrox G400 32Mb AGP Dual Head
    SB Live! PCI
    Elite Group 440LX Motherboard

    Windows 98 SE
    PDesk 5.41 Drivers
    DirectX 7

    Matrox G400: IRQ 09
    No Conflicts

Are you using the latest drivers for the Live! ? The G400 and the Live! don't play nicely with each other unless you have the latest Live! drivers. Also, how long has that Live been in your system (what was the first version of the drivers installed)? If you ever had Liveware 2.0 or earlier on there, I think you need to format your hard drive and do a clean install, b/c the older drivers cause problems, and they don't correctly uninstall.

I hope we can spare you that, though.

    Good luck,

In my experience the opengl api is much more resource hungry than directx, so it´s also more sensitive to overclocked cpu´s , overclocked ram, so be careful.

Anyway kingpin doesn´t run straight unless the agp aperture size is 256 at least with no probs.
