  • Problems with the new 5.41 driver/Turbo GL

I've installed the new 5.41 driver and TurboGL after uninstalling my G400MAX supplied driver (5.25).

Everything works fine except for Quake III which goes to a blank flickering screen shortly after starting the program. The sound runs in the background quite happily so it's like just the video is screwed up.

    System:
    FIC PA-2013 (1mb) mobo
    AMD K6III 450
    G400MAX
    128mb

256mb AGP aperture set through bios.

There is another weird thing which may be something to do with the above problem. I run the Matrox Uninstall utility to wipe the previous driver. After rebooting, Windows dectects the hardware and prompts for a new driver. I point it to the new driver's directory and it installs OK. HOWEVER. If I CANCEL the automatic install and try to run the driver Setup from Windows, it installs, reboots, then Windows prompts for the driver again!

    Any ideas?

    Thanks
    Rob

Upon reboot you install Standard Display Adapter first. Review the uninstall/install drivers FAQ for proper procedure.

      Thanks for the quick reply.

The FAQ states that the Uninstaller is used for 4.5x versions of the driver and higher and that the Standard Display Adapter is used if the drivers are older than this. According to the FAQ the Uninstaller should be all I need - is this correct?

Question - does TurboGL work with the K6III?

The reason I ask is the Readme for TurboGL says "Added support for K6 II, K6 III, Celeron and PII CPU's"

        but the Matrox FAQ states:

        10. Why doesn’t the TurboGL work on my system?

        - You will need to have either a PIII or Athlon processor to use the TurboGL feature. It also needs the same requirements as normal OpenGL games.

I take it the FAQ is out of date - correct?

I'm still getting the problems though.

        (pulls hair out)

          It's out of date.
If they did for the K6-3 what they did for my celeron, you will be thrilled!

maybe your mobo produces too much noise to get a stable AGP2x mode ...

try to force AGP1x via the reg-patches

OK I'll try that when I get home.

Is there much of a performance difference between AGP x1 and x2?

Rob G, very few programs aside from the obligatory benchmarks actually use the AGP bus for what it is meant, therefore you will not see any difference in the real world.

                    Just use PD 5.30
I have to do do this with my G400MAX + MVP3-MoBo, too.

Hope that there are better drivers next time!

                      Oh.... come on!

The simple reason is that the new TurboGL v1.00, which includes supports for K6-2, K6-3 and celeron, will not work with PD5.41 on Super7 system (especially MVP3). That's it. Use PD5.30 instead.

                        I'll try 5.30 tonight.

OK, uninstalled the current driver with the utility, installed 5.30 - and...

Exactly the same. Quake still goes to a flickering screen shortly after the program starts. Absolutely no difference at all.

Tried it again, this time removing every scrap of Matrox software with Norton Uninstall. Reinstalled again - same result.

So, 5.41 doesn't work, neither does 5.30. Looks like I'll have to stick with 5.25 until I get my new Tyan mobo.

btw - I know someone will suggest installing the brand new 4in1 driver from VIA, but they specifically state that it is not required for Win98SE. But, I did try it (nothing to lose) and it screwed up the system nicely. Good job I had everthing backed up!

                            Rob G,

Sorry, if you won't mind for another shot.

First, set your AGP aperture to 64MB. Not every motherboard can do 256MB, especially Super7 mobo.

Seond, for Win98SE, the minimum requirement is to install AGP GART driver for VIA chipsets. Current version is 3.59. You can get AGP359.zip from VIA website.

Third, get PD5.30 and TurboGL v1.00

Finally, perform scandisk, make sure you're not having any file system corruption.

                            Try again.

                              Okay,
kjliew gave some pretty good advice, but I want to clarify a little bit. The VIA AGP patch has to be installed after any change of DirectX or video card drivers. Key word: after.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.
