Overclocking dangerous?

Hello,

this is my first post on this forum Anyway, I have a Matrox G400 Dualhead (not MAX) and a PIII-450. I have overclocked the PIII from 450 to 558. The front side bus is at 124MHz right now (AGP bus is at 83MHz I think). The computer seems to be working fine (can't tell any improvements either I was just wondering whether this is going to damage the G400 in any way. I am not using any extra cooling of any sort. Has anyone tried running a G400 at this bus speed without any cooling?

Fist off- Welcome.

Not sure if this helps but my MAX runs fine (so far) at 89 MHz AGP (133 FSB) . Of caurce it has a fan.

I doubt you will have problems. I would sugest trieing it, if you have no problems with stability or strange artifact on your sceens you should be fine. Just push it real hard for a while. If you do run into problems, just let it cool down for a while and restart at a slower FSB, till you add more cooling. Then try again.

You would have to really be pushing it, for a long time, with lots of problems ringging bells, before you did any real damage. Just keep an eye out, if you don't notice anything then things are fine.

Of cource it never hurts (exept maybe your pocket book and warrenty) to provide extra cooling. One inexpencive way without risking a warrenty is a card cooler (http//www.thecardcooler.com I think). cools your video card, and a number of PCI cards, as well as lowering overall system temp; for about $25us.

As always, all advice taken and modicications performed at your own risk.

I have run my vanilla on a 133fsb for days whith no problems with or without the fan.
(sure i put it just in case but i had to check it without it)

don´t worry too much as every other single piece of hardware will start giving troubles before our dear g400

Hi Koala,

I run my G400 at 89, have done so for months with no problems. Some AGP cards don't handle out of spec speeds very well, but the Matrox cards seem to run just fine.

welcome newbie!

I have the good ole std g400 dh (still have not figured why they call it vanilla, strawberry would be a better name). I run with the 89mhz agp bus that is provided by a 133mhz fsb. I have also clocked the g400 to max settings and so far (apart from still not running in agp2x) i have had no problems. The only extra cooling i have is a fan that points cool air from the front of the case towards the cpu, this catches the g400 slightly aswell. If you don't plan to clock the g400 you won't have any problems without extra cooling. Good luck and have fun

KoalaBear33, maybe risky is a better way to describe it! I never O/C till some of these MURCers pushed me over the edge. Have a P III 500 @ 112 FSB. I recall 3D MARK 99 MAX benchmarks going up some, will have to check the archives when I get home. Just keep it cool, man.

And remember, overclocking can be like making love in the sand; you don't want to stop but you'll have too.
