In case anyone with a similar spec is experiencing problems, here's my experience...
I recently bought a G400 Max to go in my system (full spec below) and had the usual problems with D3D / busmastering or whatever the heck it is. Anyhow, after fiddling around, writing to Matrox support, waiting for a reply (and sticking the old Banshee back in, in the meantime) I finally got around to trying again a few days ago.
I went thru the list Matrox sent me of things to do, and decided to try the easiest first, so:
- Looked at System Properties in Safe mode and discovered a rogue VGA adapter installed. Removed it.
- Removed old Matrox drivers.
- Got the latest drivers for G400 and the VIA AGP chipset (check out http://www.mycomp-tmc.com/index1.htm) and installed them.
- and...the breakthrough...increased AGP aperture to 256Mb (128Mb didn't cut it, only 256Mb will do).
I've now tested it with the following games, with no problems so far:
Quake II (1600x1200, full detail)
Quake III:Arena (1600x1200, full detail, for >30 minutes)
Descent 3 (1600x1200, full detail, for >30 minutes)
System Shock 2 (1280x1024, I think)
Tomb Raider III (1024x768, I think)
Okay, so the frame rates weren't exactly jaw-dropping but hey, I was just testing...
Hope someone finds this info helpful.
