  • Dualhead Clone looks like crap :(

    OK. Setup: G400 Dualhead, Windows98se, Powerdesk 5.41, DX7a, SOundBlaster AWE32.

Problem is that this is my arcade cabinet for mame. I used to run an ATI card and the TV out looked awesome. My super duper coolio G400 though, looks like mud! The display is extremly blurred, dark, poor color, text is barely readable. I have tweaked and tweaked and tweaked some more and it still looks pretty bad. And to top it all off, the TV out just gives me a blank screen on most MAME games, no matter what res I use. Someone, please help me out here? huh? I'm begging ya's!

I don't know about your dual head TV display issue (to me it looks fine, but then I've never owned an ATI card so I can't comment), but I know why Mame amongst others wont display a tv picture. For a start, if you're using the DOS version, you'll get no display unless you enable DOS tv output. You can do this by running the BIOS update program (avalible at MURC and Matrox website). If this doesn't solve your problem, or if you're usinf Mame for windows, then I'm afraid that there is not way that you can get a TV display. The reason for this is that Mame can use some very non standard video mods (esp. those which fake scanlines) which the TV output on the Matrox card cannot handle, Try changing the Mame display mode to something really common i.e 300 * 200

Sadly, I wish it was so easy. For the first 4 hours of testing all MAME res's worked fine. Even the odd tweaked ones where going out to the TV since the DOS TV out was enabled, as well as the windows mode. It was just very ugly looking. Just from one moment to the next it stopped working. Very odd. I even re-installed windows from scratch and never got it to output again. Since then a bud was over and tried to, no go, so for now, that G400 is on the selling block to get a newer ATI with TV out, sicne that seems to be the board with the best TV out I have seen.

        Oh well, live and learn.

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but ATI's tv-output is still second to the G400's dualhead tv-out. I had a ATI Rage Fury for a time, and was quite disappointed in it (drivers and speed).

I'd say there was something wrong with your setup (not saying it's anything you did) but it's like saying a p3 is faster than an athlon, 'cause it ain't =D

PS The only emulator I got working on my tv-out so far is snes9x for windows, and it looked about as good as it's supposed to, so I'd say it's the emulators causing the problems with tv-out.
