I just took back a gefarce pro

I must say it was bloody good in quake 3, but that was it!

I had to format my system completely, up the voltage to the i/o bus to 3.4v just to get stablity in windows and when i wanted to play UNREAL, precache city, jumping about.

Now no disrespect to anyone but I prefer my matrox and Ive just ordered a MAX.

Granted if I could be bothered/patient enough it would probably kick the g400's arse on fps games. but I want to play unrealTour, rather than spend my weekend formating and tweaking.

I suspect the darn thing needs to be connected directly to the power supply, like some of the new Voodoo boards. Canopus-Japan did this with their GeForce.

I also had a Gefarce for about 2 weeks. It didnt work at all at first, but a complete re-install fixed that. Then it would crash after about 2 hours, unless I unoplugged a few SCSI devices (zip, cd-rw, dvd-ram, 2nd hdd).

I took it back after 2 weeks of stuffing around with all the drivers etc.

Lucky for me I had put my G400 in my 2nd machine.

Ill never go for a Nvidia card again (unless everybody else starts sucking too).

I'm still working on my GeForce256 evaluation. So far it has been doing OK. I still prefer the G400, but I want to give as fair as possible of an evaluation of the GeForce256. It has been very stable on me. Because I have an Athlon, the drivers force agp 1x, so that might have something to do with the stability. (yeah, I know about the registry hack.)

I absolutely cannot do any 3D gaming with a playable framerate at a resolution higher than the max playable resolution of the G400. I thought that the GeForce was supposed to be fast. Where is the speed? It is not that much better. Maybe it is because I have a SDR instead of a DDR.

The video quality of the G400 is better than the GeForce. The GeForce is good, but not that good.

Hardware T&L...so what? Are they really expecting games to use significantly higher polygon count in models? I'm already upset enough with how long it takes Unreal Tournament to load up. If it had ultra high polygon count models, I'd hate to think how long it would take to start up. Then there is the other aspect: higher polygon counts require more system memory or you are going to be hurting as your win9x swaps. Has anybody else loaded up the few demos that nVidia has? They take a long time to load, and all you can do is spin around and fly through the model. EMBM is a much better solution. Too bad GeForce can't spell EMBM.

The GeForce driver does support color correction for the video overlay (ie, the DVD movie) on the primary display.

Sometimes I'd wish that places like Tom's Hardware would start harping on video card features like EMBM and dual head. I'd also like them to report on the futility of hardware T&L support. EMBM is much more practical than T&L.

SDR boards suck complete ass, but the DDR are significantly faster than my MAX. My friend with a pii 450 and a DDR refrence board was getting about 10-15 fps faster in every res in Q3 and UT, but my colors looked soo much better. much more vivid. Not saying the MAX is bad or anything, it rocks, totally playable at 1024 with high detail 32 bit everything. Its just that his geforce is faster... Thats all. Its a great card, but not for me. I need dual head and the tv out ive ever seen! LOL i made everyone shit thier pants last night at out micro LAN party(10 people) when i busted out q3 at 1024 on a 50in TV. It was coo!
