Am I the only one who reads and understands "4X compliant" to in fact mean that any given card does NOT necessarily do 4X transfers??

Maybe I've been reading between the lines for too long, but like the back cover of a book that says nothing about the story between the covers, but instead has glowing reviews of the author's previous book(s), a statement that said card is "compliant", tather than a clear statement that said card does ?X transfers is a clear dodge that the card does or may not do such transfers, or do them completely.

Surely I'm not the only one here who was around when the first 2X cards came out...all the new cards of that time claimed to be 2X, but you had to comb the reviews to find which ones did 2X transfers (as opposed to "using the AGP slot as a fast PCI slot", a common phrase of the time), which ones actually did AGP texturing, etc.

That's why I bought a G200 in fact, it was one of the only cards that was actually AGP2X and not a hideous kludge--- like, say the Permedia2- based cards, which if I recall were capable of 2X transfers, but had severe image quality problems. At the time, I was upgrading from a Rendition V1000 based card...all of the Rendition cards (V2100 and 2200 chip) were not capable of 2X... do you think the box for Diamond's Stealth whatever-number-it-was said that?? No...it was trying to get the straight scoop that netted me most of my hardware bookmarks, and started me reading boot!!

I'm sorry to display such a lack of empathy, but I gotta admit I'm getting tired of people having/being given the impression that they can just walk out and buy hardware. Hell, those of us who spend months in intense research get it 'wrong' (don't get what we want, get it too soon, etc.) half the time. The computer hardware industry is extremely competitive, and retail consumers are usually not the main customers of any given manufacturer. So nobody's going to spend a lot of time making sure the marketing copy is clear to the uninitiated and perfectly correct to said newbies as well.

I'm sorry to rant on (and probably consign this topic to The Box), but couldn't people just buy a Compaq or something and be happy? And the rest of us willing to do such intensive research be the little niche market and be happy? You notice you don't hear us complaining about this crap...it's nearly nothing to a HW slut...

...or maybe it's just me.

You go girl

Even if the marketing bafoons at matrox made it very clear that even a 2 year old would understand what agp transfer rates the g400 would do, how many sales would they have lost?

Just look at this forum and count the posts of spoiled children crying for a 4x card but have no clue why they want it.

I think that the blame is on the general public. If the majority of us had an IQ high enough to hold an intelligent conversation, then the marketing bafoons in all companies can just say it as it is.

Does swinging a 3 iron above my head disqualify me from being classed as intelligent? if it does, I'll stop

Hey, before I bought my G400, I CALLED Matrox tech support (half hour on long distance hold) and ASKED if the card "was a full 4X AGP CARD (not chip, CARD). Matrox assured me it WAS.

I think many defending Matrox on THIS point should check out the reviews that MATROX LINKED TO from THEIR site! Many refer to a 4X AGP CARD.

Anyway, it IS a great card. I'm just not so sure about some people in the COMPANY. IMHO, this was intentional misrepresentaion.

Also, I've read (somewhere) that SOME G400's really ARE fully 4X AGP. You are said to be able to tel by the serial number (starts or ends with a 4 or something).
Anybody have any info on this?

just to stir the pot a little more....just because the card does not have the "4a" in the id number doesn't mean it definately does not do 4x, it just means that it isn't supposed to
