Abitbe6-II, G400 max and sb live

I have just installed the above mentioned mobo and a new hard drive (maxtor udma66)
My g400 is only on AGP x 1 and i dont know why or how to change it.
Any ideas ?
Also the sound card is causing the system to hang and restart straight away when i shut down.
Is this anything to to with the matrox drivers or is it all to do with the sb live 16 emulation.
I have disabled it in device manager and remed the lines for it in my auto exec bat as i was told to to in the General hardware forum.
But shuting down the pc is still a bit hit and miss.
If any one can help me out i will be very grateful as it is driving me nuts

By the way do you get weird pink corruptions on some of your icons in 2d?

its just a few other people have mentioned it and I had it too.

hmm...I have a very similar system that I just got recently and everything seems fine. My system is:
PIII-450
Abit BE6-II
SB Live Value II
64MB RAM
Matrox G400 32MB DH
Ibm UDMA 66 HD

The only thing that I can think of is IRQ or DMA conflicts. This is especially true when you have UDMA/66 enabled (ie. you are using a UDMA/66 Hard drive attached to the UDMA 66 connector). Look in the Abit manual to see if the irq setting is conflicting (I think there is a diagram of the motherboard with the different slots and their IRQ numbers). The UDMA/66 controller shares IRQ with some of the slots. So, to avoid conflicts, you should put your sound card in a different slot. I am guessing that you may have just placed the sound card in a free abitrary slot instead of seeing whether it is in a slot with IRQ sharing.

NOTE: I might be mixed up between IRQ and DMA. I don't remember what the UDMA/66 controller shares with the slots/bus. I think it is IRQ but it might be DMA too. In any case, if you look in the UDMA/66 section of the Abit manual, it tells you about this sharing.

My 2d icons are fine.
I have had my sound card in slots 1,2,3 and 4
The manual says that Pci slot 1 shares irq signals with the agp slot.
Pci slot 2 shares irq signals with Pci slot 5.
Is the hpt 366 controller the one that controls the udma 66 hard drive?
Because if it is it shares with pci slot 5.
I have my isdn card in there and i have no idea if it supports sharing or not.
This is all completly new to me

if you are getting lock ups, its normally irq conflicts.

I was getting them what i did was go into the bios and turn off all non essential bits, such as com port 2, assign irq to usb,
ide channel 2, turn off power management

it worked for me, now ive just got to get my scsi zip drive working and my huappage tv tuner in, doh!

Yep the HPT366 controller is the one that controls the UDMA/66 HD. Note that this controller is only used if you are using UDMA/66 instead of UDMA/33.

Based on what you have indicated, it seems as if you should stay away from slots 1, 2 and 5. I am not home right now, so I don't have anything available to look at

I beleive the slot layout for the BE6-II is the same for the BE6 (what I have.)

First pci slot (next to vidcard) has the IRQ shared with the video card. Avoid it. One of the slots shares an IRQ with the USB (the last slot on my board), and the other shares an IRQ with the HPT controller (second to last on my board.)

Don't plug anything into the slot that shares an IRQ with the HPT controller. There's no way to turn the controller off (AFAIK), so it will eat up that IRQ, and I can't think of many (any?) devices that will happily share an IRQ with it. My netcard and USB share an IRQ happily.

Put your Live card in the second slot--that should be one of the few slots that CAN get a unique IRQ. Go into device manager and look to see what devices are on which IRQs--they might appear to share happily (according to Windows), but try to not let them share, because some devices just don't like to.

Open up the System Information thinger in accesories->system tools and see what it lists for forced and shared hardware.

If you have not already done so, try changing the "SDRAM Leadoff Command" in the ADVANCED CHIPSET FEATURES of your BIOS to a value of 4(hopefully it currently set to 3). That switch got rid of the pink dots on my BF6 with PIII 500E. Let me know if that works.

You can force 2X AGP with a registry hack. Drill down to the following line: HKey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\
Services\Class\Display\0000(you may have to look under 0001,0002, etc.)\Settings\Cpu

Create a new string and call it "AGPFLAGS" and set the value to "-1". There shouldn't be any problems if you're not overclocking the FSB of the system. However, if you're overclocking the FSB and go too high, the system may lock up during boot or you may have other problems. For instance, after using this hack I was able to boot up to an FSB of about 120 without problem. It would not boot at 130 and it would boot at 125 but when I did a shutdown & restart it would not even post and then the board started beeping and I had to redo all of the BIOS settings. So if you're overclocking at a high FSB(perhaps above 120) you have to make the choice of between a higher FSB/1X AGP and lower FSB/2X AGP. Good Luck

slot 3 should be best for the sblive as you need to give seperate irqs to the sound and vid cards

I have managed to get AGPx2 going , by using a reg hack which i downloaded from here several months ago.
Later on today i will try moving the sound card.

Moving the soundcard should help. G400 doesn't always share happily.
