  • Powerstrip reporting AGP 1X on G400MAX!

I fired up Powerstrip to do some tweaking, and the diagnostic reported that my G400MAX is running at AGP 1X!

    Hardware:
    Abit BE6-II
CuMine 550E w/ Iwill Slocket II
    Matrox G400MAX

Is Powerstrip wrong, or am I really running at 1X? If so, how do I make it run at 2X?

Some motherboards are flakey with agp2x, and it very well could be that you are running at agp1x.

You can also download PCIlist from the MURC utilities to verify if you are in agp1x or agp2x.

To force agp2x, download the PD 5 Registry Hacks from the MURC utilities and install the one called forceagp2x.reg. Reboot, and it shoud try to force agp2x. Crush it with some intense 3d gaming to see if it is stable at agp2x. Something in your setup made it decide that agp2x was too noisy to be reliable, so it fell back to agp1x.

I think the most important question is, does it matter? I have tried to find a difference with either, and except for a few FPS in some of the synthetic AGP tests, I havent. No diff in UT, Q3, or OpenGL performance in lightwave 3D. So I decided to leave it at 1X and OC my CPU for an extra 106Mhz.

      But thats just me.

      ------------------
      Asus P2B-F, P3-450~556, 512MB PC100 8ns SDRAM, G400MAX (yay!) at 160Mhz, Teac 58S CD-R, Toshiba SM-1002 DVD-ROM, Toshiba 40X SCSI CD-ROM, 8.4GB IDE primary drive, 9GB Micropolis Tomahawk UWSCSI, 9GB IBM U2WSCSI, 18GB U2WSCSI Cheetah, Diamond MX300, 3COM 10/100TX, 3COM Gaming Modem, Adaptec 2940U2W

And a partridge in a pear treeeeeeee.
A computer is like sex. Your never 100% sure what your doing but when all goes well, it feels REAL good.

I completely agree with you Genom. AGP2X, and agp4x for that matter, are just buzz words of the marketers. There is a lot of technical umph behind it, but the net result in today's games is zilch. You really have to go out of your way with synthetic benchmarks and synthetic tests to show that there is a difference.

As for me, agp1x or agp2x, I don't care as long as it is stable. There is no human perceptable difference in gaming.
