  • Anybody had MAD problems installing a G400? Getting it to work?

I got the OEM made in China G400 Single Head 16MB card and attempted to mate it with an

ABIT BM6 containing an overclocked (but I didn't do it yet) 366-550 370socket celeron.

Anyway, after several mentally taxing days and help from others on boards, we solved a PC100 problem involving the Kingston RAM not liking a slot... then got down to the specific problem with the G400 as the system was able to boot

(we did not get beep codes till the memory sit. was taken care of... I thought there would be beeps if the system cannot detect system memory but oh well..)

Anyway, the G400 works in this BM6 ONLY when this towercase is laying flat like a desktop case.

Bring it up half way vertical and it would stop working... I mean it would still send a video signal but you'd lose the ability to type! Weird.

If you set the tower up vertically as is should be and then boot up, well then the computer doesn't POST, the HD doesn't churnup... until I use my finger to push the G400 UP a bit and hold it there...

If I let go, the computer halts and I again no longer have the ability to type.

I installed this picky G400 into my BH6 sytem with a tower case and no problems really...

I then installed another known working AGP card into this BM6 and no problems sitting the case vertically.

I then installed a working ISA graphics card into the BM6 and also no problems sitting the tower vertically.

I did all this using the Kingston memory & NOT using the kingston memory but memory off of my BH6 system, so I rule out everything but the G400 & the BM6.

I wish I can try this G400 with ANOTHER BM6, as I wonder if this is a phenomenon with BM6 boards...

Anybody care to kindly express some ideas/experiences?

    I'd appreciate reading them, thankyou.

Your problem sounds like a common one. There are many G400/ABIT combinations having seating problems. Search this site for G400 seating issues and you'll find a method for bending the mounting flange on the G400 to better seat the card.

Another problem may be a flexing of your case. Try adding a brace diagnally inside the case approximately in the middle. Or experiment with stuff (your imagination) to increase the stiffness of your case. Or buy a stiffer case.

darksyd thanks for the link... and it worked fine.

          i'll try that bending diagram.

i've already tried bending it somewhat last night but I'll do it more aggressively and see what happens.
