  • Latest Matrox G400 Driver Incompatibilities... HELP!

The latest drivers (last two releases by Matrox) have really messed up my PC. With the previous driver I would get a Windows Protection Fault Error which would cause my system to only want to run in Safe Mode. When I tried to run it in normal Windows would say "Wrong Adapter for your Video Card". So, I got the Matrox Driver Uninstaller Utility, went back to using the drivers from the CD that came with the card, and everything was fine. Now with the latest beta version, the problem except it doesn't say "Protection Fault Error", but it still wants to only run in safe mode. The bad part is that I am now constantly fighting with the drivers. Even when I put the original drivers back in, it eventually wants to go back into Safe Mode after a matter of hours or sometimes days. With the driver uninstaller utility, it says that it may not remove older or newer drivers, so that may be the problem (that the newer drivers are not completely being removed).

I am using Win98 SE on an AMD K6-2 333 MHZ w/128 MB Ram on an Asus P5A-B MoBo. Any sugestions (other than reformating the hard drive and starting fresh or trying to get an up-to-date uninstaller... if that is the problem) or any one else experiencing the same problems with the latest drivers?

Quite simple, I had the same problem; here's your help:

First of all, download the latest AGP driver for your motherbord from Asus site (the problem reside in the old driver).

First, start in safe mode. Run the matrox uninstall utility. Search on C:\Windows all files that have G400 in their name, and delete theme (be sure they are part of matrox software).

Again, search for all the file with the extension .inf containing the text G400 and delete all.

Go to Start, Run, and type regedit. In the menu choose Search, and go for "Powerdesk". It should find various entries. Kill them all! Pay attention: when the search find a match, look on the right part of the screen; there should be an OPEN (OPEN!) folder icon. You should delete it.

Now, restart your sistem. Install a standard VGA card. Then install the new AGP driver. Reboot, and install the wathever version of G400 driver you want to install. Eventually, reinstall the monitor.

Note: for me it has worked. If it does damage to your sistem, well, I assume no responsability.
Sat on a pile of deads, I enjoy my oysters.

I love it. There needs to be a filter for people who are about to ask horribly redundant questions... something like:

      - Do you have an AMD chip running on a degenerate SS7 motherboard?

If yes, please read the FAQ. If no, please continue...

      - Do you have an ABIT motherboard and a snug fit on the card?

      Etc.

      - Gurm

P.S. I am in no way insulting or demeaning the people who have these genuine problems, just... *sigh* I dunno, it would be a pain to implement. We need a pseudo-AI post interpreter!

I'm the least you could do, oh yeah
If only life were as easy as you
      I would still get screwed
