  • Problems w/ G400,Athlon500, Asus K7M Please help!!!

I know this topic has been done to death, but so far none of the solutions seem to be working for me.
I have an Athlon 500@500, Asus K7M motherboard, G400, 2 ethernet cards. I've seen all the problems. I get the plaid screen of death, I get lockups when playing any machine intensive game (Quake 3, Midtown Madness), I get abnormal program termination in the middle of games ( after a few minutes of playing, the game stops and I'm back in windows) also seen somtimes in Windows (Explorer or IExplorer crashes), I get a black screen w/ white horizontal and vertical lines and various other bits of instability.
I've installed windows 98 and 98se many time.
Currently I'm runnig 98se w/ all the windows updates, as well with the updated Asus and G400 bios.
I've run memtest on my memory (it passed).
I've tried changing the VIO from 3.4 to 3.31 ( where it is now), and I've switched from 3 VSB to 3 Volts, I've also tried the force 2X AGP reg file (which didn't work) as well as force 1X AGP (which didn't work either)
And lastly, I bought a new AMD recommended Antec 300W power supply. I'm pretty much at the end of my rope, so any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    My System is

    Athlon 500
    Asus K7M bios rev 1.07
    Matrox powerdesk 5.5
    Quantum Fireball 10.2
    Samsung ??? 3.2
    I'm using the onboard audio.

    My IRQ's are as follows

1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard
    2 Programmable interrupt controller
    3 Communications Port (COM2)
    4 Communications Port (COM1)

Did you remember to install the AMD AGP miniport drivers?

Try uninstalling the current G400 PD drivers, then install the AGP miniport first, lastly install the G400 PD drivers & of cos DX7
      Abit KT7A-RAID, TBird AVIA 1ghz o/c 1.3ghz, 256Mb Infineon PC133 SDRAM, G400 32Mb DH, Maxtor DM+60 30G, Quantum Fireball ST 3.2, Toshiba 32X, HP CDWriter 9100i, Samsung 700IFT, HP Deskjet 710C, Philips Acoustic Edge, Sirocco Crossfire

I've tried installing the miniport first ( after windows is first installed) then PD, with no luck ( when using 98 1st edition I used the updates as well).

          1. Boot up in safe mode
          2. UNINSTALL the G400
          3. After uninstalling, reinstall the G400
          4. It will ask to reboot. Let it reboot.
          5. After rebooting, it will say it found the G400, and is looking for drivers. Let it reboot again.
          6. After the second reboot, it will then install the TurboGL. (It might also install monitor)

I've had the exact same problem with the plaid screen. Leave all the voltage settings at default. I didn't force AGP 2x. To get the G400 running at AGP2x, install the "Turbo" version of the AGP miniport...
          ok now i'm confusing myself
          Good luck
          hi

I had lots of problems and found it was another card using bus mastering that was causing the bombouts when used with the G400MAX. The latest sound card drivers fixed my problem (aureal 2040 reference drivers). I would try removing your realtek card and then see what happens. If no luck then remove your sound card and see if that solvers the lock ups. Hope this might help.

                I'm curious about the 2 NIC's?

Also boot into safe mode and look for duplicate (ghost) drivers in device manager

A sound card sharing an IRQ with a NIC is not good.
