  • Anyone has experience with G400 and ALi 1543 chipset...

I just finished building a rig for my friend. Well he wanted a cheap rig so I bought for him one of those mobos with integrated sound and V.90 modem manufactured by crappy PCChips... As it turned out, that mobo has ALi's 1543 chipset (is that Aladdin V?) and I just can't get busmastering working in Win98...
The problem isn't only with G400. The disks won't do DMA transfers, and I tried putting in a Voodoo 2 board from his old rig and the problem is exactly the same. Everything is waaaay to slow than it should be (he has a Celery 433).
    Anyway this are the specs:

PC Chips 726 MRT mobo, 64 Megs PC100, Celery 433, WD HDD, Pioneer 44x CDROM, G400DH 32Mb, or ATI Rage II+ DVD PCI 4 Mb & Voodoo 2 combo

Anyone know what this is all about? I know it's a crappy mobo, but things are slower than his old P233MMX! Go figure....

to my knowledge, the Aladdin V (the 1543) chipset doesn't support Celerons. i could be wrong... i use a Aladdin V chipset in my Asus P5A with a K6-III 400 @ 560 (thank God for water cooling! i still need to fix my signature...), and it is faster than shit. try going to http://www.acerlabs.com/eng/support/driver.htm and download the latest IDE drivers, which enable bus mastering. also, make sure you have your jumpers set correctly! i couldn't figure out why my system was going so ****ing slow, and it turned out that i had placed the bus speed jumpers in backwards order, and my bus speed was something like 50 MHz. check all those things. also, tell me what motherboard you are using (EXACT manufacturer and model). then i might be able to help. and go to the manufacturer's site and download the latest BIOS and flash utility. that could help to. give me some more info.

      Hey anthrax...

Look at my post, dude... It's all there, but here I again...
The mobo manufacturer is PC Chips, or sometimes called Pc100.
Model is 726 MRT, it has integrated sound+modem in a single chip Soundpro 8738, what is in fact a C-Media8738 chip. Chipset is ALi 1543 or AlladinV, but was originaly covered with a sticker saying BXCel HT1543. It is AT or ATX capable and also has a Slot1 and a Socket370. It automatically detects which one he will use. Mobo supports Celerons and PIII's up to 800 Mhz, and has selectable FSB via jumpers with values 66, 75, 100 & 112 Mhz. 3 DIMM slots for up to 768 Mb of SDRAM...
Windows 98 are installed (original & SE, tried them both) with DirectX7 and Powerdesk 5.41. With ATI+Voodoo combo, latest ATI & Voodoo drivers.
Mobo has the latest BIOS available, just like the G400.
Tried overclocking it and at 75 Mhz it posts but crashes everything after first 2 minutes... Same Celery works at 83 Mhz FSB in my ABIT BH6 rock solid with default voltage, and stock heatsink and cooler. The mobo simply generates too much noise when communicating with SDRAM on non-standard FSB's...
Latest drivers for chipset and IDE busmastering and IRQ steering downloaded and installed numerous times...
You see, anthrax, there isn't a thing I haven't tried already... so if someone has been there using this same config, that will be the only person able to help... But anyway I appreciate your good will, thanx man.
I also thought AladdinV was only for SS7 mobos but it looks like I was wrong...
This really sux... Oh yeah and one more thing.. When ATI PCI card is in the board it has a boot up logo saying some crap about perfecting your PC and rotating their logo... Well on this mobo all that is running at 1/3 speed than usual, and it won't rotate normally no matter what I do with it... I just thought of it as a detail that shows that the mobo is really crap...
Oh yeah... I think these mobos can be found in HP or PackardBell cheapest configs...

Sorry for the long post but my friend keeps bitching on and on, and I have to shut him up... It's his fault anyway... You can't get a machine that will live you sh*tless for measly 300 bucks...

      Grrrrr I'M PISSED...

I know it won't help you, but I've learned one thing after building about 10 PC's, never ever try to save money on mobo's. Buy the one you really want, the one that will really works, even if you need to pay more of it. A good mobo makes a good computer.

You still didn't tell if you have installed all ali's mobo drivers, if not do it and report to us what happens.

A more useful post of mine.
I just checked and it seems that the 1543 chipset is ali's southbridge chipset. It only controlles IDE channels, PCI, ...
Could you please tell us what your northbridge is?

Well this won't help much but pcchips are cheap and nasty. There was a amusing article in a magazine once about them and the only one I used for my student sister insisted that soundcard wasn't working yet it did. If let the drivers default to where they wanted to go the machine gave a blue screen of death.
By the way did you do a clean install of his operating system before swapping over because it maybe carrying junk across. Have you got a list of the irq's. I presume you installed all ali bus mastering drivers.

Goc - I'm having some very similar sounding problems with my MAX on an IWILL XA100 (alladin V with a 1541 chipset). If you figure it out, let me know...

Thanx for the replies, but the problem is that that cheap machine is at my friends place beacuse it belongs to him
I'm only trying to help him because he is totaly ignorant when it comes to computers, and it was HIM that wanted the cheap mobo (dumbass ).
I was also giving some thought to that "AladinV not for Celery" problem, and also came to the same conclusion as Vlip, that it was only southbridge that I've seen. So when I catch some time I'll go to my friends house and see what's under that heatsink that says BXCel PC100 on it (I put my money on some form of SiS 320 chipset).
Just to make things more clearer, I did five fresh installs of windows in different configurations, and also with different HDD's and CDROM's... There is no way any junk was left, unless I have ghosts creeping around my HDD After installing Windows I always installed latest ALi drivers first, than the graphic cards, and finally DirectX7... No good, whatever I do...

I think it won't do any good whatever I do... It's simply PCChips... So it would be nice to turn this thread in "lets spit all over crappy taiwanese mobo manufacturers" and finally end up in The Box...

Bwah... if someone still has an idea, help out

                  Ali Southbridge with Sis Northbridge?
What a bastard that does make (still not come back from my strange AMD north and Via south K7M combinaison).

I do believe that the main fault comes from the mobo, you should try to swap it with something from Asus.

                    Hey Vlip...

If you read my first post you should remember that it's my friend that forced me to build him a CHEAP rig. I was forced into buying the PCCrappyChips&Fish mobo, because for less bucks than I'd give for the cheapest ASUS board I also got a V.90 modem and SB with Sensaura support and two pairs of speakers.
Now that was my friends choice, and he'll have to stick to it now
I just want to help him, beacuse, well... he is my friend...
So you see, if money haven't been a problem Vlip, you can be sure that I would buy him something from ABIT, ASUS, AOpen or even Intel... Certainly not a PC Chips mobo...
I am not cheap, my friend is (I don't know why I keep saying that). If you look at my machine specs you'll see that. There is also one more of my machines that my brother is using until Win2000 officialy comes to the shelves, and it is a dual Celeron400 o/c on ABIT BP6 to 2x 600 Mhz, with G400MAX, 10xDVD, SB Live Platinum and 256 Megs of RAM... it's all connected to a 29" SONY WEGA TV and a 17" monitor, with sound coming out to a SONY STR-DE 635 Dolby Digital processor. All is handpainted in black colour I promised pics to some people here but I have to get a digital camera first, DOH

Must brag around a bit hehehhe
