  • I had AGP 4x enabled, now its 1x - WHY????

Just checked with PCIList 2.0 today and noticed that "AGP Transfers" is marked as 1x speed. This USED to be 4x - This I am sure of. And yes, I have a camino motherboard.

I haven't tried to reinstall my drivers yet, better to ask before. I can't seem to remember doing any changes that might have caused this. Except for runnng the program mentioned here: http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/Forum4/HTML/002670.html

And how do you "force" agp settings, haven't found that one ...

    ASUS P3C-2000 Mobo
    Pentium III 450 @ 521MHz
    128 Meg PC100
    G400 Max

Also, I included the exerpt from PCI List 2.o

    --------------------------------------------------------
    AGP transfers
    --------------------------------------------------------
The AGP aperture is currently set to 64MB.

The system board supports up to 4X AGP transfers. The graphics card supports up to 4X AGP transfers.

AGP 1X transfers are currently enabled.

    --------------------------------------------------------
    Sideband addressing
    --------------------------------------------------------
The system board supports sideband addressing. The graphics card supports sideband addressing.

    Sideband addressing is currently enabled.

    --------------------------------------------------------
    AGP revision
    --------------------------------------------------------
The graphics card is an AGP 2.0-compliant device, and may not work correctly under Windows 95 or with first-generation AGP system boards. Ensure you have the very latest GART manager installed.

    --------------------------------------------------------
    Potential IRQ conflict
    --------------------------------------------------------
The graphics card is sharing an IRQ with another device, which could cause problems for one or both devices. If possible, assign the graphics card a unique IRQ using your system BIOS Setup program or by rotating cards to different slots.

    --------------------------------------------------------
    Related issues
    --------------------------------------------------------
PCIList only queries the system configuration registers. In the event of problems, other things to check to ensure AGP support is enabled and working properly include the following:

    - make sure the correct and latest GART manager for your system board is installed, as well as the latest drivers for your graphics card and DirectX version

    - in your system BIOS Setup program, the AGP aperture should be enabled and set to at least 64MB; an IRQ should be assigned to the VGA card; any option referring to spread spectrum should be disabled; and video BIOS and RAM shadowing should be disabled

    - if the system has been overclocked to reach 521 MHz, the AGP clock may now be too high; system memory which otherwise works without errors may be unable to cope with the heavier demands of AGP traffic when running 3D applications

    - some AGP features may actually be available in hardware, but be disabled in specific BIOS and/or driver releases, or even by user-configurable software switches (e.g., in the Windows registry)

I don't know about the 4x thing but you can download the reghacks to force agp 1x & 2x.

And why would you have your AGP aperature only set to 64??? Set it at 256....

ALBPM, I used to have it on 256, just moved it down to 64 to see if that would change anything. Its on 256 again....

Hmmm... I think he is most certainly teasing us
Well, it could be worse... He could have said: "Dammit! My AGP was 4X and now is only stinky 2X! Help, help, help!"

Yeah, 2x is so stinking bad! BWAHAHAHAHA
No, seriously - I couldn't tell any difference between the modes, however it bother my sense of order to lose a 4x connection to a 1x.
Actually I think the issue wether the MAX actually does AGP 4x or just is compatible with the 4x never got entierly answered.

Interesting to read that you seem to be stable at that FSB (~116MHz)...

Do you mind sharing your exact FSB and dividers ?

                    -> Maggi

Sure, let me get home first and I'll post the stats.

In the meantime I can tell u that I run the ASUS P3C 2000, a very nice board.
It smartdetects the FSB being higher and lowers the speed of the PC100 ram, to around 86 MHz or so. This , I think, makes the most troubles for overclocker with bad BIOS'es when the ram starts flying the stability is the first to go ...

                      Kristian:

The AGP 4x issue is as follows:

If your card has the appropriate serial number (with a 4A in there somewhere... or something like that, you can look it up in MURC), you get 4x transfers. Otherwise, you get 2x transfers, in a 4x slot.

                          Multiplier: 4.5x

SDRAM FREQ: 87 MHz (Formerly 100MHz)
                          SDRAM CAS LAT: 3T

                          SDRAM Precharge: 3T

Also this was the number on the card (G400):
