  • G400 and P!!! 700 problems, anyone have them ?

Over the weekend i replaced my p!!!500 with a new P!!!700. When win98 finished booting up the screen was corrupted. after trying the latest beta drivers, and the drivers before that(5.4 ?) the problem of screen corruption still remains, until, i dropped graphics hardware acceleration all the way down using the slider under the hardware tab. figuring all was good, i thought a quick game of q3 would be nice. but, i kept getting the message "can't find opengl subsystem". Anyone have any ideas?

And what happens if you try your old processor again?
You could try forcing agpx1 as well. It maybe that your agp x2 was borderline before and now with the faster processor speed it's gone over the edge.

We like to think of processors as being "plug and play," but they are not.

I've seen problems arise with Windows and processor upgrades on other forums. Often, these problems are fixed with a reinstall of Windows. I'm *not* suggesting you do this just yet. But if worse comes to worse, you might want to give it a try.

I installed an PIII 600E over the weekend and overclocked it to 702 MHz (and eventually 744 MHz) without incident. It's kind of a crap shoot.

Could it be your power supply?

Do you have a Sound Blaster live in your system??? There have been problems with the Live and the new P3's. creative has some new driver updates that help with compatability issues with the Coppermines.

              Smb,

your config is pretty much identical to mine.
Win98 and W2K are runnning very well and stable using the latest Matrox drivers.

As Paul suggested, there are issues with Sblive soundcards. Does your mainboard support the coppermine cpu? ASFAIK the P3B-F needs to be board rev. 1.03 with bios 1004.

the motherboard has the latest 1004 bios, but no sblive. i use an mx300. I also have an antec 300w powersupply, so i don't know if that's an issue.

I figured i can live without playing games for a while, and have suceeded to just doing a little web browsing until the next driver set becomes official, hoping that it will fix the problem.

                thanks for all your help.

You might try removing any fans that are connected directly to your mother board. Get some adapters to connect all those fans directly to the power supply 4 pin plugs instead.

So it works fine with your old proc and G400.
What happens if you run at agp x1 with the new proc.
If it runs okay at AGPx1 it could noise. You don't loose much with agpx1 apart from lower results from some benchmark programs.
Just try agpx1 first before zooming off testing other things.

I tried the 1x agp as well, but to no effect, even set the aperture to 8, but still a no go. I have no fans attached to any of the motherboard headers either. maybe a quick format and reinstall might be in order, something i was trying to avoid.

Well you've got a backup it ain't too painful. Another thing you could try is one stick of memory at a time and see what happens.
It may also be worth looking at Asus web site and see if theres any bios upgrades that have appeared recently.
Another time I've seen graphics corruption I've solved by updating the directx version. Which version are you using?
