  • essential ogl files

I did search this forum and have identified the following files on my machine:

    windows\system:
    glu32.dll (136kb) win98
    Opengl32.dll (736kb) win98
    g400icd.dll (1.79MB) matrox

when Turbogl is installed, then you get the
Matrox opengl32.dll in the relevant game file

But what is this and where does it come from?
    windows\system\opengl.dll (1.15MB)

Have I found an errant file?

Don't be alarmed. As far as we are concerned there are two OpenGL implementation for the Win32 platform:

    - Microsofts OpenGL ICD (with drivers from the manufacturer) which is called OpenGL32.dll.

    - Silicon Graphics OpenGL software implementation which is called OpenGL.dll.

Games always use Microsofts full ICD, so their link to the OpenGL32.dll, so there is no harm leaving OpenGL.dll. It could be that some application of you is using the SGI variant.

Thanks. I hoping that it was the cause of problems I'm experiencing with Halflife but no such luck

Derah, have you tried the new beta drivers? They're much more stable than the last beta set and they're just about as fast, if not faster, than 5.41 with TurboGL.

They fix quite a number of gaming issues as well.

You must remove the TurboGL file from your games folders beforehand or they will continue using TurboGL instead of the new ICD.

And never remove the opengl32.dll from the system directory. It has to be there, it provides hooks for things like Matrox's ICD (g400icd.dll or something) to grab. Without those hooks, OGL is toast on your system.

Maybe you should post your specific Half Life problem again.....in the gaming forum, of course.

I posted my global gaming problems here a few weeks ago because they coincided with a total system failure after installation of a NIC card and cable internet service.I've got that straightened away. Thanks to all of you who contributed their advice! My ogl driver file question was last in a series to rule out software causing persistent video problems. I'm down to a possible defective M/B or G400max. I am looking forward to installling the final version of the new drivers, especially in light of their solving the "dark engine" problem.
