  • Problem no one has been able to figure out yet.

Ive had my Matrox G400 MAX for about a month now and i am completely satisified with its 2d, dvd, and duel head performance.. but when running games i encounter the same problem in nearly all of them... Asherons Call and Quake 2 especially... it seem that in both games and others the textures like seem to tear where they form together...in corners and edges.. it appears as if there ripping apart and you see a bunch of little white dots. I would include a screen shot but its to hard to get one becuase the dots flicker on and off making it even more annoying......ive tried drivers 5.31, 5.40 and 5.50 beta... have not tried the new ones yet.. also the card is on IRQ 9 not being shared with anything. my current system is as follows

    Abit BP6 Mobo
    Celeron 366
    64 meg PC 100 SDRAM
18 GIG UATA 66 7200 RPM hard drive..
    SB live value.
    Linksys netcard.

If anyone can help it would be most appreciated..

    Thanks

Try enabling the 32 bit z-buffer, under display settings/settings/advanced.../options

if that doesn't fix it, try underclocking your card to see if that changes anything.

Flickering would indicate a poorly seated card. Have you taken it out and just put it back in to see if that helps. There was one board in particular that had a seating problem with the g400 and I think it was the Abit boards. Try the G400 without putting the holding screw back in, since that sometimes pulls the back of the card out.

The artifacts could also indicate that you card is overheating. Make sure all fans are working properly and maybe check the temperature in you case. If you can, try to leave the PCI slot next to the G400 open.

          my 2 cents,

i have seen a couple of cases like this one and they were resolved by downclocking the g400 memory or slowing it´s timings. More the second. Anyway if this is the case then you have some really stinky memory modules

Uh, I have exactly the same problem on my G400 32mb DH.

I allso have one more annoying problem:
Playing games, like driver, it infrequently moves tacky, just like the hdd would be swapping for a wery short time once a while.. but it doesent.

I have the same problem. I see it in both Q2 and HalfLife, and that is running at default clockspeed (no OC).

It's not nearly as bad on my present system (K7-500) as it was on my old system (333 K6-2), but it still appears from time to time. Don't now the solution, but as Leporis says it might be a qustion of changin memory timings. I don't think it's a unique G400 problem, I have also heard of Voodoo owners with the same problem (It's just because it doesn't show as much on the voodoo with its washed out textures.

Have you checked driver versions. Also the BIOS on your card? Also, have you tried going down to AGP 1x? You have probably tried these, but if you havn't, they MAY help.

Are you running with V-Sync disabled? That can cause the tearing. enableing V-Sync may lower your FPS, but you can decide, what is more important FPS oe image quality.

I haven't seen the texture tearing with my card (G400 Marvel). However, the heat issue is probably a valid answer. I have witnessed it with an overclocked TNT2 on my other system.
The slow downs and lockups in half life and quake 2, one fellow mentioned comes from using the turbo gl driver. The workaround is to set the AGP apeture in the bios to greater than 64MG.
I set mine to 256 MG and all slowdowns and lockups went away.
