  • K7M and G400 (boooo)

Okay I have a huge problem, I have a k7 600 with a asus k7m motherboard and i have a g400 dualhead, which i recently temporarily traded for my friend's singlehead. Okay the problem was when I had AGP 2x set on my computer my g400 would freeze my computer at random with small glitches, in 3d and in 2d, usually within the first 2 minutes. When I set it to AGP 1X my motherboard just gives a bunch of stripes before it gets into the win98 gui (in cold boots). So I decided to just trade my g400 with my buddy to see if it was just because I couldnt run AGP 2x on that card (I couldn't run agp 2x with my g400 on my old p2-400 be-6). Well anyways I'm running at agp 2x with the singlehead card now but when i go into anything 3d my computer jumps back into the desktop screen like every 30 seconds when entering some 3d application (3dmark and games) So whats the problem? I have the newest g400 drivers , 5.50.10 beta, and I have the newest *stable* bios for my k7m, so I have no clue what to do, if someone could help please do. Thanks!

btw the guy i traded with just told me my dualhead card doesnt work on his system.

    stats:
    k7 600 + k7m mobo 1.04 bios (i believe, how do i check?)
pc-100 ram generic <-- maybe unstable? i dunno
300 watt comp usa power supply (bought it just for this)
    g400 32 mb dualhead <-- wont run at agp 2x stable? =(

i have no irq conflicts, it is seated in well, etc etc, have tried aperture size, and can someone refresh me what numbers on the regedit are agp 1x and 2x, i've tried all of -2 to 2 and well I just randomly test settings, but anyways I'm on clean install system.

My G400MAX + K7M w/K7-500@800Mhz is very stable with; force AGP x2 and 5.50.005 Drivers

I had problems with 5.50.1 drivers, so try that. Also boot into safe mode and check for ghost (duplicate) drivers and remove 'em

    Good Luck

First you need the registry hack to force AGP 2X. Then to fix the cold boot problem use regedit to change the "AGPFallback" string from "0" to "1". AGPFallback is located at > [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\Display\0000\Settings\CPU] This is what is making it run at 1x.

I'm running a K7 650 @715 with a G400Max using the latest 5.50.10 beta drivers. I recently updated the M/B bios to beta 127 (which is stable BTW). Also Asus has released their version of the update Busmaster and AGP Miniport drivers. You problably already have this installed, but a "reinstallation" might not hurt.

Some other little things you might try are: Disabling the "ClkGen for Empty PCI Slot/DIMM" in bios, and do the same to the Spread Spectrum ClkGen; Make sure your VIO jumper (on the M/B) is set to 3.4v; Try disabling Advanced Power Management altogether.

The part that baffles me is why your G400 "couldn't run" in AGP 2X mode on the BE6. I was running mine on a BE6 for a couple of months at 2X with no problems. I'm unsure if this indicates a problem with this particular board? Don't quite know what else to suggest.

Have you tried to replace your power supply? Is your Athlon a .18 or .25 version? I'm running the K7M+G400 MAX with ZERO problems with the 5.50.10 beta drivers. BUT, I did have to track down a decent 300W power supply. Also, check your memory, cheap memory can sometimes cause the problems you are seeing. Also, check your BIOS version, you should be using 1007, or 1209(which I use). BIOS versions older than 1007 do NOT work properly and were the reason for MOST reports of K7M problems.

Right, I have an Athlon 800 running on a K7M motherboard with a G400 MAX. It took a bit of time, but I have a system that runs everything - direct3d, opengl etc. perfectly. Firstly, you might need the Beta bios which can be found on asus' web site (http://www.asus.com). If you go into the support section, find the section about problems with running the board with the faster Athlon chips. This will point you in the direction of the Beta bios (km126.zip). I had no end of problems before installing this, but it may just be because of the speed of my processor. Secondly, go into your bios. Ensure that Plug and Play operating System - under the plug and play section is set to no. For some reason, when I let Windows handle the IRQ assignments, the machine boots into Windows, and promptly crashes with a load of garbage on the screen - sounds similar to your dots problem. There seems to be an incompatability between the AMD AGP port driver and the plug and play aspects of Windows since this only happens with this driver installed. Unfortunately you might find with this setting that you cannot get the G400 using a non shared IRQ. Mine seems hell bent on sharing with my DVD decoder, This doesn't seem to cause any problems whatsoever, so I'm not really bothered. Thirdly, install a fresh version of Windows 98 - I'm using SE so I cannot account for other versions. Fourthly, install the relevant drivers from the K7M CD - the AGP port driver. Finally, install the latest Matrox drivers - I find that the beta drivers work absolutely fine for me - remember to install the separate Turbo GL driver at the same time. If all goes well your system should run fine without having to tweak AGP settings etc. If it works on my machine - which is packed full of cards - adaptec uw scsi, sblive, sbawe32, creative dxr3 decoder, zoom modem then hopefully it should work with yours.

The "final" BIOS for the K7M has come out, ver 1008 I think. Check www.amdzone.com for details.

Okay I'll try the new bios but someone emailed me saying they had the same issues and just replaced the ram so i dunno, could it be maybe i got a really old test board of g400? cause i did get it really early, about when the reviews on sites started popping up... well anyways is there anyway for me to test if its the ram without buying new ram. also i formatted and reinserted everything again and everything was working fine until i installed quake 3 (which installed direct x 7) and thats when everything started freezing in desktop and games and stuff, so I'm thinking its the direct x 7 trying to access something and i dunno, well i disabled AGP in the direct x 7 setup and well i get less lockups in desktop, but gaming is still an impossibility, well thanks for all the help guys, keep throwing in suggestions! =P
