  • Newest G800 Rumors

    Just saw this:

    --------------------------------------------
    Matrox G800 = 800mega fillrate ? -

These are the latest rumors I have been hearing about. Rumor has it is that the G800 is going to be a dual chipset like the Rage Fury MAXX. This how the 800mega fillrate will be achieved.

We all from the previous rumors is that the new chipset is like the VSA-100 from 3dfx as it is scalable. The first carnations of the new chipset will start out as a dual configuration.

Well, I would be disappointed if it was to be true, I don't want Matrox to become like 3Dfx and make multi-chip cards just because they are no able to design a good processor.

Of course we are talking about rumors but nVidia's NV15 will have a fillrate of 800Mp (if not more) with a single chip....

What do you guys think about that?

        Hi Patryk !
So this is where you dig your rumours ?

As to Matrox becoming "3DFx-like", don't forget having a multi-processor solution is not necessary a bad design, as it has 2 main advantages :
        - scalability
        - increased bandwidth
but one main drawback (increased memory required for duplicate texture management)

As for the NV15, I wonder where they will find the bandwidth for the claimed fill-rate... Looks like they are going for another GeFarce SDR sketch.

        See ya !

          Almost impossible from technical standpoint.
In symmetric dual-chip design, AGP transfers cannot be used. One chip is always faster than two chips performing the same function, so we'd rather see two or more functional units in one chip. Anyway I don't believe it.
I expect that the G800 will be faster, expanded incarnation of G400 (similarly to GeForce being a vastly enhanced TNT), with stronger arithmetic unit cabable of hardware transformations, more rasterizers or wider rasterizer, and maybe some extra stuff.

These are JUST my speculations and nothing more than speculations.

It'd better be much much more powerful than the G400 because they're going to compete with the NV15 and not with the GeForce.

I wonder if the G800's will have outlandish power requirements like the V5's and NV15's will. Will I need an extra drive conector for it?

I think all these rumors are fun. Hopefully Matrox will be able to produce the G800 on a 0.18 micron die so the power requirements will not be too bad.

My computer was working great until my brand new "top-of-the-line" power supply committed ritual suicide, after only 24 hours of use, and took out 2 motherboard (mine and a test board), 2 hard drives and possibly more...a moment of silence please, in rememberance of a valiant computer that served me well.

              Sorry, had to vent.

The G800 will ship in single and dual chip formations.

Somebody needs to invent faster ram, this is all getting rather pathetic.

Anyone read the newest news on memory (especially for video)?
                    How does 266MHz DDR sound?
Might that be fast enough for now?
                    Enough bandwidth?

I think the question to ask is how much the graphic card going to be cost?
Since we know the fact that all video company will produce new graphic card every now and then, so I don't really mind about the performance (new one replace the old one, simple as that), but in the consumer point of view, I like to know whether the graphic card which I buy can last long enough for the life cycle, whether it is worth it. One of my friend is Nvidia fan, he bought the TnT2U when it came out and 4 months after, it became history made by Nvidia because of the Geforce.
I am using G400 which I am satisfy with cause it doesn't cost that much and deliver the performance I needed, the feature set on it also very nice. I like the way Matrox produced their card, their life cycle is approximatly one year.
Sorry about all the nonsense on the beginning of this post, it just come out of my mind (somehow ), anyway I also cannot wait what Matrox can deliver for the rumored G800. I should have thanks those provided the info on this card.
