The big thing that I was actually thinking of was the power management controller. On my system anyway I used to get some pretty strange stuff happening occasionaly, and then I discovered that I both the Ali power management controller and the original one were both present in the device manager. It took me a while to discover it though cause I rarely have cause to boot into safe mode (thankfully). Anyway, once I removed the orignal one a lot of stange glitches that I'd been having went away.

Although, if since you did a fresh install of windows then you're right, it probably is something else.
If I think of anything else I'll be sure to add some input.

      Dimitri:

You have overtaken CMB for the "patience and courtesy" award. Hang in there. Here are a couple of links on old topics that may help confirm your suspicions about your Ali:
      http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/Forum4/HTML/000801.html

Note particularly Joel's advice on his home page. Gurm knows what he's talking about too.

There's also some good and informative discussion here: http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/Forum9/HTML/000183.html once the whine fest settles down and GURM gets his boomstick stroked.

Bottom line is that you're prolly right about the mobo. Get some advice from Joel and get a better SS7 board.

One thing worth doing is re-installing Windoze again just with the G400 in. If it then runs normally like that add cards back one by one. Sometimes windoze gets it knickers in a twist when trying to install many devices in one go. Remember plug and play is really plug and crash. PLAC!!

Bixler, why bother with another ss7 system? I already have a K7-PRO (110 version ) and will order an Athlon 700 on friday after the price cuts. I've finally said screw the patience and get a good system.... Woo Hoo!!!

The PIT - I have to reinstall windoze when I change systems so it's really not worth it in my opinion to reinstall it twice in one week. I can live without UT for a week. Especially when I have 3 midterms....

          Thanks for the help everyone.

Well you'll have ruled out the G400 and the proc and the motherboard. Will we hear you scream if it's something else?

              Seems to me that the AudioPCI should be on IRQ 5 at least (if we can't get it on a high IRQ as well as 5, which looks impossible);

and the RealMagic should probably have IRQ 11 to itself....

... leaving the NIC on IRQ 9 in solitary splendor.

First I'd try to force these settings in Windows, and secondarily in BIOS.

If that didn't work for some reason, then I'd try putting the NIC in PCI slot 1 (so it could share with the G400, which some people have their only success with), and see if the reorganization Windows would then perform helped at all.

If that didn't work, then I'd swap slots on either the AudioPCI card or the RealMagic, depending on which one has fewer attachments to unplug

              Just a concept.

I would be supprised if it was the motherboard as my System uses an Iwill XA100plus with the following hardware K6-2 400 @ 450Mhz, G400DH, SB Live, Compaq Netflex-3 PCI NIC, Iomega Ditto Dash ISA tape controller!$#%$, Quantum 27Gb HD, Pioneer CD-ROM, Wearnes CD-RW, LS-120. Runs everything fine. The driver versions are PD 5.41.008, ALi AGP 1.65, ALi IDE 3.40 & Win98.

I seem to have fixed it. I used the AGP Util to force agp 1X (apperantly the reg hacks didn't do a very good job at it?) and it seems to work fine now. A little slow, but what can I say for a 300 Mhz "thing" Can't wait for the 700 though... Thanks for the help.

BTW, now that this is working, my mouse seems to freeze up on me every once in a while. I have a Logitech Cordless Mouseman Wheel. Any ideas how to fix that? It doesn't help much when you're trying to snipe people in UT...

Hey, never over look the obvious.

Are you useing Logitech's drivers or standard MS ones. I have had good results with the standard ones. Wheel works and everything. It is reported as a PS/2 compatible mouse port, in Device Manager.

                          uhm ... yeah right ...

Dimitri ... do you have Logitech's Mouseware installed ???

Those crappy 'so called' mouse tools crashed my machine that hefty, that it instantly rebooted in the moment the login screen of WinNT popped up ... I had to boot into safe mode to uninstall 'em and since then I didn't have that prob anymore.

Just stick either with MS standard drivers or install Logitech's, but the drivers only.

Yeah, I have the logitech drivers only. Strange. It seems to have gone away. I guess now I just don't have an excuse for sucking at UT. HELP!!!! Somebody think me up an excuse and do it quickly...
