  • G400 and Athlon Motherboards

I'm in the process of putting together a new Athlon system. I'm going to be choosing from the following motherboards:

    Asus K7M
    Epox KX133
    MSI 6195 pro

Are there any "issues" with any of these boards and the G400? I know that the MSI board has problems with Nvidia cards, but I haven't heard anything about Matrox cards.

    Thanks for the advice,

    Paul

Well, I've got a K7M, it was a little tricky to set up, but as long as you read the manual carefully and install all the latest drivers and bios you shouldn't have a problem - I certainly have a system that is by and large very stable, the only problems I've had are with Win 2K and beta drivers. Under Win 98SE no problems at all.

BTW - According to the reviews I've real - both magazine and web, the K7M out performs all other popular Athlon motherboards.
What do you want a signature for?

According to this review... http://www.slota.com/reviews/msi/k7pro/ The MSI is better, but that's only one review...

Oops, I put the wrong model number ... It's the MSI 6195 (K7 pro) Sorry...

      Thanks for the info...

      Anybody else??

I'm running my Max on a GA-7IX, which is an AMD chipset like the K7pro. It has never been any problem whatsoever. I hope this helps!

I have a K7M as well. I don't really have any issues. The K7M does allow tweaking of the VIO. This can help with some stability issues. But the MSI K7Pro has Super-Bypass on all boards, it's a crap shoot with the K7M, and the Epox 7KXA supports PC133 RAM and AGP 4X. Both boards are very stable. There's a new comparison out between the K7M and the K7Pro at Firing Squad > http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/...ro/default.asp . They picked the K7Pro.

Personally, if I was in your shoes, I'd wait just a bit longer. Tyan is coming out with their new Slot A board, the Trinity K7 (aka the Tyan S2380). It will be KX133 based but will feature the ICS 9248xx-110 clock chip that is on the K7M. So it will most likely have the best of both worlds. I might even swap out my K7M for one. Wanna buy a nice inexpensive, slightly used (1 month), Asus K7M?

Be sure you get the Apollo 133 chip-set. Maybe not with the Epox board, couz it didn't get so great a review at Anandtech, but the chip-set is def. worth getting. Take a look for your self @:

i have an MSI K7Pro. I bought it because sources told me that it is the best board to get for the Athlon. although i had some problems (lock-ups in games) at first concerning my sound card (Monster Sound Mx300). the latest Aureal drivers fixed that. the board seems fine with the G400MAX. as of now, i have to set the AgpFlags=1 (in registry) for games to work totally stable (0 and -1 may cause lockups).?

                bmcgarvey,
do you know if the K7Pro is violently against using PC133 memory? I have a stick from my current motherboard that I would like to use on my soon to be arriving K7Pro motherboard...what kind of memory are you running? just curious...
