  • G400 VS Creative Geforce DDR

Does anybody know how much faster or better the Geforce is?? Ok I know G400 rocks in 2D..... But otherwise....
    Is it worth an upgrade????
    (not Max vers.)

The GeForce 256 is an OK card, but if you already have a G400 it is not worth "upgrading" to it. In 3d gaming, the min fps is about the same with some of the newer drivers. The GeForce has an advantage with the max fps in 3d. Video quality wise, the G400 is better in 2d and 3d. The G400 has embm, dual head, dvd max, where the GeForce has s3tc.

Well, I had a Geforce DDR for a while. It had its shortcomings but was pretty darned fast.

In UT, the average fps was really high, even at 1152x864x32bit but there are some nasty low points in fps. While the G400 can't touch Geforce's high end fps, G400 has a steadier framerate IMO.

Also, G400's 2D and video are of higher quality, if only slightly. For synthetic benchmarking, Wintune98 showed G400MAX getting about 1/3 higher score than Geforce DDR in 2D

        Thundrchez,
The GeForce does not have S3TC. I think you meant T&L.

          Hi Marre,

unless you are a dedicated hardcore gamer, stick with the G400 ...

and of course it depends also on your actual system, that is to say if you 'only' have an olden CPU (K5, K6, Klamath-P2 or low clocked Celeron) you should go for the GeForce if you're into heavy 3D action.

Post some of your details and you'll get further advice.

Your CPU should be strong enough to fullfill your gaming needs on your G400.

If you'd head for the GeForce,

you'd loose [*]DualHead and all of its features[*]EMBM[*]the slightly better visual quality

                you'd gain[*]a few fps in 3D apps

                ...

So what is your actual purpose when using your computer ?

                games ?
                graphics ?
                3D animation ?
                surfing the net ?
all of the above and more ?

I think the G400s are still the best overall solution and adding a RainbowRunner G gives you even excellent video editing possibilities ...

Can you live with something that is not the fastest? Then why bother to upgrade? Better wait for the next Matrox product. I'm sure it will rock.

For the price (50-60 bucks more) the Geforce DDR is a faster card. Me and a friend of mine both have Athlon 600's running on the K7Pro (He has 256MB RAM and I only have 128MB). Here is the Quake3 test we ran:

                    (Timedemo Demo1)
                    1024x768
                    32bit color depth
                    32bit textures
                    Geometry detail-High
                    Texture quality-3/4
                    bilinear filtering

                    GeforceDDR: approx. 52fps
                    MatroxG400MAX: approx. 35fps

let me just say, thank you fellow murc-types.
Here a person asks a legitimate question about upgrading, and possibly even to a compting, non-matrox product. The response was considerate, thoughtful, and level-headed. You are all to be commended.

I've been frequenting the 3dfx site, as I made the mistake of purchasing a voodoo3 2000 pci for work. I've been having problems with the NT drivers, and can get absolutely no help over there. Moreover, anyone who posts is likely to get flamed. For instance: http://www.3dfxgamers.com/boards.asp...st&boardpage=1
This is the tread regarding when SMP support will be added to the NT drivers. Look for a guy named Doc9. He is just mean. And unfortunately, others let themselves get sucked in.

Anyway, just trying to give applause where it is due...

Just what is a dedicated hardcore gamer?

If I play UT and get smeared by Haig everynight am I hardcore or softcore?

                          Moreau:

It took us some time to evolute to that stage, but I guess we made it and you obviously know where to find us in case you'd need help

                          LAMFDTK:

That depends on how often you let Haig smear you ...

But to avoid further confusion, I meant it like:

If gaming is your one and only concern and you don't give a single cent for other purposes on your computer, you're a hardcore gamer ... but I guess you didn't really miss that point ...

                            "MatroxG400MAX: approx. 35fps"

                            That would mean, that you're only getting 8fps more than my K6-2 333 @ 420 (105x4). Huh!?

Is 35fps at that those settings low? When i had a k6-2 350 (not o'clock) i got around 23-25fps. should i expect more than 12fps increase, with the athlon 600? at 800x600 i get around 50-52fps. please let me know what i should expect and what i may be doing wrong. settings again:
