Ok guys I got a problem with g400 and win2k install

ok I installed Win2k pro 2195 and all works fine. I checked IRQs and vga adapter is on 9 and the other stuff is on other numbers. I went to run the win2k setup for the 5.03 drivers and it came up with a message that the drivers did not have a microsoft digital signature etc and would i like to continue install. I did and the rebooted, i then got the win2000 startup screen that shows the progress bar etc then after that was finished i just get a black screen. set IRQ for VGA is set in the bios as I had win98 installed on the computer before formating and installing win2k. Please help guys. Also I noticed that I cant change the monitor. the properties tab is greyed out. I have win2k drivers for my monitor and wanted to install them. thx

Just install with standard VGA and install the Matrox drivers afterwards.

Just a thought...if your machine is using ACPI (is it?) would you have to assign an IRQ to VGA, or would Windows be able to handle that?
You might try turning off the assign irq to vga if you ARE using ACPI.
What other hardware do you have in your system?

No. You want your vid card to have an IRQ assigned to it even under win2k, if not you won't even get the drivers operating at all.

Well my pc is installed as standard pc and not ACPI, I dont see any conflicts of any kind. I have USB enabled in the bios however my apeture size is set to 128, someone told me that for the win2k drivers i should set it to 4 is that correct?

Hi, I'm back! (Evil grin...)

Well, try setting the aperture down to 4. You're not going to be happy with me, but the problem is quite likely your SS7 motherboard. You may need to do a bit of fiddling. I'll see if I can scrounge up the newer SS7 drivers for Win2k, and in the meantime, you go see if there is a new BIOS for your board. You may need to reinstall to get ACPI (force it if necessary) in order to make things work.

But try the aperture first. It's not a permanent solution, but...

ok I will try the apeture setting Gurm, I have a FIC PA-2013 rev 2.0. I installed a bios I got from FIC tech support which they said was to make the board Win2k complaint. How do I force ACPI? Can I change it without having to reinstall win2k? Thx jediphoenix

PS. by the way guys I was not shooting down matrox for my problem I was assuming it was something I was doing wrong since im an NT newbie jediphoenix

I did, vga is installed after i installed win2k, then i ran the setup for the matrox drivers and after reboot, black screen

Per MS:
"To change the Windows 2000 Standard HAL to ACPI HAL, use Winnt32.exe to install Windows 2000 over the current installation. If you try to change the type of HAL without running Setup, you may not be able to start Windows 2000 successfully again or you may experience hardware and other stability problems."

Ok well I got the drivers working now by changing my apeture size in the bios to 4 megs. wierd. well should I still try to force ACPI? If so after I run the file you listed where do I get to choose the pc type? I never saw any choices for ACPI or standard PC

Hi

I have exact same problem! However I just tried the aperture size at 4 and No joy!

Mobo is VIA 503+ bios is bang up to date and USB enabled also.

Looks like I will also have to fiddle with ACPI?

Will follow thread with interest.
