Points absolutely well taken. Actually to tell you the truth I didn't have many problems with my first G400 SH, except when it killed its self for no apparent reason, but driver problems were very few and far between for me. Now availability on the other hand was and still will be a big concern for me. I remember how long it took to get my first Max and that whole pre-order thing was an absolute disaster for some of us. Hopefully history will not repeat it's self, although it seems to follow Matrox.

But just to solidify my position as a Matrox maniac, I hope it kicks the living crap out of Vooodoo5, NV11, NV15, the next ATI card, and Savage2000+ (which shouldn't be too difficult).

Has anyone managed to find where the G400 actually tops out as the CPU power increases? All the benchmarks indicate that the G400 scales VERY well as the CPU power increases. This indicates that with a 1.1GHz processor, the G400 will get closer and closer to the performance of the other cards that are currently faster at the lower resolutions. I remember seeing that the geforce tops out at around an 800MHz CPU.

My G400Max scales to every MHZ increase in CPU power I throw at it. There was a substancial jump from 650 to 700, and again from 700 to 806 which is where I am now.

YoKoMo have you posted data to that effect in Maggi's thread? That's the kind of info he's looking for!

                  UPDATE !!!

... and just in case ...

                  Info on G450 and G800
                  March 10, 2000

A source close to Matrox in Japan told us today new information on upcoming G450 and G800 which Matrox won't deny or confirm yet.

                  G400's death is near!
According to him, Matrox won't produce G400(including MAX) after the first quarter of 2000. High-end graphic market which G400Max has occupied will be replaced with G450(code named Condor1) and in the 4th quarter, Matrox will launch G800 (code named Condor II). What surprised us mostly is that Matrox will supply G200 till 3rd quarter of 2000 to low-end graphics market.

                  G450 (Condor I)

                  - G400 MAX core with integrated RGB, NTSC/PAL and DVI outputs
                  - 64bit DDR SDRAM
                  - support for DDR FCDRAM
                  - 320 pin PBGA
                  - 0.18 micron 6 Metal Layer process
                  - Mass production : Mar. 2000
                  - 16MB frame buffer version : 2 x (2M x 32 DDR)
                  - 32MB frame buffer version : 4 x (4M x 16 DDR) or 4 x (2M x 32 DDR)
16MB version of G450 will use 166MHz memory clock (in case of FC DDR, 200MHz is feasible)and uses 64bit dual memory bus.

                  G800(Condor II)

                  - Pin compatible with G450
                  - Double fillrate of G450
                  - Support for 250MHz DDR FCRAM
                  - Support for Hardware T&L
                  - Support for DirectX 8.0 Shader and fully functional DX7
                  - New DX7, 8 IDC drivers
                  - Mass production : Sept. 2000.

Matrox will show dual chip configured version of G800 in order to meet the higher transformation and fill performance too.

                  Fun time !!!

Now the real question is do us penny pinchers put up with the G200 for several more months and wait for the G800, or do we finally say the hell with it and get the G450? Hmm...

To G450 or not to G450! That is the question!

If I had a G200, I would buy the G450 as it hit the streets...

The drivers are proably almost the same as the G400's, and that means they are great. If you buy a G800, you have to go through many driver revisions before you are happy with the performance/compatibility. The G400 core has proven itself already...

Well, what this G450 stuff means is that you should NOT buy a G400 max, as the G450 will be basically the same card with faster memory and smaller die (less heat, easier to overclock). And that is probably the very reason why Matrox does not yet want to talk about it publicly. Better to sell what you have and not have people wait for the next big thing.

By the way, you should not take this as a flame-bait, but the conclusion should be quite clear.

And then, to upgrade a G200 to G450 or not, I think that will be a price/performance decision. Let's see the numbers first...

Damn, i was hoping to see the G450 core to be running at like 180 mHz or so. Oh well, i guess ill just have to o'c the bad boy. BTW i LOVE the DDR memory part of it. I think thats enough reason to buy a G450 over my G400MAX right now!

                              What is 'DDR FCRAM'?

I know Double Date Rate, but what is FC?

I don't think there will be an advantage to flipping the memory chips (ie. Intel's FC-PPG). So I assume it's something else.

If I'm correct it's DDR SDRAM but with a much lower latency. And it might be great because the access of memory for memory is quite random. At least not serial.
