G200 with PII 266 Mhz

Hi, New user here. I am running a G200 with a PII 266Mhz and 64Mb RAM (win98). The problem is that when i install the new drivers my computer my computer locks up whilst on the win98 loading screen. Any Ideas?

Have you uninstalled the previous drivers using the PD Uninstall Utility?

Yes I ahve Uninstaled all of the previous drivers.

Have you upgraded the BIOS to 2.6 already?

Yes, you should get the latest BIOS. Also be sure the card is 100% in the AGP slot. Some motherboards are seated well and this will cause lock ups.

I have Bios version 2.6 and the card is 100% in the slot. the current drivers that i have installed are:-
Display driver version: 4.10.01.4100
VDD Version: 4.10.01.4100
Matrox Power Desk Version: 4.10.007
Direct Draw/Direct 3D: 4.10.01.4100
Direct X: 6

A couple of things. I'm going to assume that you are using an Intel BX based motherboard and not a Via Apollo board. Although, if that is what you are using then that may be the problem. If you are using a mobo with a Via chipset download the 4.17 Via 4 in 1 drivers and install them.

On the other hand, if you aren't(and for that matter even if you are) there are a couple of things to keep in mind about the 5.x series of drivers. First of all 5.50 and beyond REQUIRE DirectX 7. So if you are trying to install 5.52 then you have to install DX7 first. Next, just so that you are forwarned, there are many people(especially those using the G200, myself included) who have experienced problems concerning both performance and straight out functionality with certain revisions of the drivers. In particular 5.41 and beyond. I would recomend against using the 5.52 drivers with a G200. Use 5.41 or more preferably 5.30(or depending on how much of a performance monger you are you can actually mix the two). The problem basically is the PowerDesk program itself, although the 5.52 drivers just plain don't work with DX games.

Last but not least, when installing any of Matrox's drivers follow their uninstall procedure to the letter. Yes it's a bit of a pain and kindof silly, but it will garauntee that things should go right.
