• Outputting video clips & DVDs to TV question.

Is it normal for video clips & DVDs to be cropped off (the sides)? My monitor shows the whole picture whether it is wide screen or not. The TV doesn't. I have a Sharp TV connected to my Matrox G400 32 MB (non-MAX) (20"?). I have messed with the DualHead settings in display properties, but I have no luck!

Thank you in advance for replies.

Bixler: I just posted it. The reason why I didn't post there earlier because it was mainly for video editing. Let's see if I get replies?

Did you try a couple of the DVDMax options? The one about aspect ratio 'Detect based on video window size' should do the trick, along with 'Preserve aspect ratio'. If that doesn't help, just go mad and try everything on this property sheet until you get a result.

does the max support "PAN&SCAN" for playback of widescreen on normal aspect ratio screens?

Marshmallowman: I don't think so? I never heard and seen the term for the Matrox G400 cards. Anyone know?

Thank you in advance for replies.

Pan & Scan is a feature which some DVD movies has included. It is not dependant on the TVO of any graphics card, but merely a feature which can be taken advantage on by the player program, if it supports it (It is an info-layer, which tells which part of the 16:9 format that should be displayet in 4:3-format).

See this page for some good info on several cropping methods.

To my knowledge, the player that comes with the G400 does support this.

Ghydda: Well, remember I do have this crop problem with regular video files. Even 320x200 video sizes get cropped. Weird. I wonder if the TV is the problem?

It's normal. The great majority of TVs don't display the entire image. The part you don't see is called overscan.

If you capture video using a capture card you will see the opposite effect. You will see more video on your PC than you could originally see on your TV.

Are there any options (in display properties) or programs that can resize the TV output to show the whole picture even if I lose the enlarged size?

Thank you in advance for replies.

Hi Antdude, if you are using Win2000, there will be a option to adjust overscan in the next release. This info is coming from Matrox, I asked the same thing earlier.

For W98/95 there should be the option to adjust overscan in the monitor properties (not sure, but if you search both MURC forums and matrox's tech support forums, you'll find the instructions).

JaKa: I couldn't find it. I have an IBM P72 monitor and Windows 98.

                        Thanks.

Try searching with word "overscan", they are old posts. I'm not certain if there was a solution to TV-Out problem but the subject was at least discussed:

"... We are outputting in standard PAL and instandard NTSC when in DVD max mode.

Unfortunately, there is no way to adjust the output when in DVD max mode."

So it limits you to using Clone and adjusting the screen size from the monitor settings, or usinDVDMax and cropping the picture.

BTW: my TV-Out is also missing a little bit from the borders, but not too much.

Yeah, well, the problem here is that you _know_ there is something not visible on your TV Who knows how much you are missing from the ordinary TV/VCR picture...you just don't have any way to notice it
