Strikes me as rubbish, I thought the geforce was the one that didnt go much faster given more juice?

    Hi Skeoch,

of course is the G400 fillrate limited, but if you'd do a search in this board, you'd find plenty of threads covering that topic.

Even an OCed Athlon @ 900 MHz scaled the performance of a G400 until the very last MHz and I doubt that there's any CPU yet that degrades the G400 to a bottleneck.

    Cheers,
    Maggi

thanks maggi, on an unrelated note, I was considering buying a new cpu and video card.

I have some patience (a little), now I read about the geforce card and looked at the framerate in 1024x768 it only seemed to go one frame per sec faster even if the cpu went up 100Mhz (fillrate limit?) so to me it seems that for games (FPS) I should spend my money on the vid card rather than the cpu.

      What do you think?
P.S. the Image quality is equally as important to me as framerate (thats why I got a Matrox in the first place)

The g800 sounds very enticing, but the ATI rage 6, has sparked my interest, loads of features.

I updated from a P3-500@600 to an Athlon 650@750, then just to help "stave" of the "video card fever" I decided to Overclock my MAX. No it's not quite as high as a GeFarse! But it can easily play my most demanding games at 1024.768. It should get me by until the G800 debutes in 6 months.

It may not get faster on the high end but the low end framerate always improves with a faster processor. It helps games like UT and Q3 out a lot.

All cards are fill rate limited at some point, even if you use a 1000mhz cpu the biggest performance improvement will always be at low resolutions and color depths,i have both a G400max and a Gefoce DDR on 2 machines, both of which are overclocked(the cards, not the cpu's),and the scores posted by each are about 25/30fps apart at any resolution or color depth even when using the same cpu and motherboard,by the way the Geforce card overclocks very well,i got it running at 150mhz core and 350mhz memory, but there is a situation where the Geforce will outrun a G400 by an even bigger margin...it involves using custom settings which are not available on the setup screen,if anyone want's to try it,especially if you have a VERY powerfull cpu, here's what you have to do on the q3config file:
            • change the setting r_loadbias to "-2"(default is zero)
            • change the setting r_lodcurve error to "10 000"(default is 250)
            • change the setting r_subdivisions to "1"(default is 4)
            • finaly save to changes so that the game applies those settings when the game starts
            • you can always revert back to the original settings,so there's no danger at all...
these settings change the max poly count on the game from 10.000 per frame(which is the maximum amount the game allows through the setup screen) to well over 20.000 polys per frame...On the geforce there was no performance penalty at all(still haven't figured out how to add even more though),i'm using an agp 4x capable board so that helps both cards,so there's no doubt in my mind that T.L works very well on the Geforce(regarless of it's fill rate advantage),there is also no doubt that matrox has to add T.l to the G800 to remain competitive with the other cards being released shortly.
