  • Bloody MGABG.EXE

What is this mgabg.exe, from Matrox Graphics Inc., that keeps consuming 30% of my CPU time in W2k?

I'm running W2K and got the same problem. I renamed the file so it doesn't start anymore. That worked fine.

Let's find out what could cause it to claim that processor time on our PC's and not on other PC's.

Perhaps you also have an Asus P2B, or you have a SBLive. My exact configuration is in my signature.

Matrox users without any problem with the processor time: also tell us what hardware you have We could help Matrox solve that problem soon.

I wonder if this problem is recognized by Matrox..

However I do have SBLive! on Asus P5A along with my G200 and 3Com NIC. It looks like it's a G200 problem. Can't say if SBLive! is involved..

Just make sure you make an emergeny BIOS disk for your G400 before you stop using mgabg.exe, and you'll be fine...

You really shouldn't rename services in W2k to stop them from running. Had it been dependant on another service or vice versa you could wind up with a nice Stop Dump. MGABGEXE is a service that can be disabled from the Services Snap-in on the MMC (right-click My Computer and select Manage, Services is at the bottom). Just double click MGABGEXE and change it's properties from Automatic to Manual or Disabled.
