  • Fan on G400 Max

I removed the stock fan on my G400 Max.
It was the noisiest fan in my box..
I have a CardCooler fan in the slot directly
below the Max...anybody think this will be a problem, not having a fan directly attached to the card?
I have decent airflow in my case and I don't plan on doing any overclocking.

    Thanks

Nope not at all, just make sure you replace the heatsink that the fan was mounted in with a much more substantial one!

I didn't replace the heatsink, but the fan I have blows right on the card.

How do I get the heatsink off and put on another one?
There appears to be pins holding it on...

Your wrong about that. The HS doesn't use the typical silicone HS compound but instead uses a black thermal wax. When you actually put the card into use, it'll bond the two together.

            So...what do you think?
Am I o.k. with just the fan aimed at the card
with out its fan? Or if I need a new heatsink, how do I remove the old one and attach a new one?

I just ordered a Tennmax lasagna cooler for my MAX. The fan is the loudest fan in my box also. See what happens.

Just for the record, this MAX was one of the first shipped and had an older style fan. The newer ones have a more efficient fan (larger blades). Maybe will be quieter also.

rdnzl, the Max's HS wasn't designed to be used without the fan and knowing first hand that it will lock up. Replace the HS with another much larger (didn't I say that?). Something like what would be used on a P200. I found that many mom&pop computer syore have these for sale for ~ $0.50-1.00 each. It should cooler slightly better than the thermal wax if properly applied. Your 40m fan is fine.

Think we need pic's of Maggi's HS fan combo again. Nah, wait till tommorrow, I'll have pics of my new cooling setup!

Here are my so so pics, Enjoy

I found a local mom&pop computer store that has these HS's for $0.50 each (bought many about a year ago) They measure 53mm x 48mm x 25mm. The fan is a Pabst M#812 60mm 32 cfm and is sucking air through the HS. The added benifit of doing it this way is the additional cooling provided by the venturi effect. (like it really needs more! LOL

BWAHAHAHAH!!! Greebe that's the BADEST way of cooling a GFX card I've ever seen

You had better market this contraption!! Looks like a kickass idea

So, tell us how you made the duct for the fan and mounted it to the card.

I dunno...I just finished playing NFS Porsche Unlimited for an hour at 1600 x 1200
32bit and it didn't lock up...in fact it didn't even seem to get overly hot!!..

If I do put on a new heatsink, how do I removed those gold pins???
