You must be a wanna be mechanical engineer. (just picken The same way it was installed, just in reverse. Pinch the slited end and pull. It will come off.

If it didn't get hot enough to lockup then you must be underpowering it or are extremely lucky so far. What's your setup?

Without the fan the G400 get warm but not hot
,I just figure the card cooler fan blowing on it must be doing a good job of cooling.

So if I want to put a new sink on, I just pull the pins out and stick on another one?
Will the same pins hold another heatsink?

I haven't had any lockups yet...They better smarten up on the G800 and put a quality fan on it that doesn't sound like my neighbors Volkswagen bus...I only expect the G400 to hold me until the G800 comes out..hopefully this fall....

I pulled the heatsink/fan off my MAX recently. But not because it was "noisy"! I wanted insurance that it wouldn't cease functioning when I least expected it. And I heard bad things about some of these fans around here.

My replacement was a modified unit taken from an old slot 1 Celeron. Basically just hacked the two ends off and drilled some holes for the attachment pins. Well I did lap the bottom of the heatsink. And because of it's dimensions I had to bevel two of the sides for clearance. It is 27mm high, so it blocks the slot just below the AGP. On my motherboard this is an AMR slot, which I considered a loss anyway.

When I removed the stock heatsink and fan, I also found that the adhesive had failed to bond to the chip. Unfortunately this resulted in the top of the chip being rather concave (it's been in use for seven months). So it requires a good amount of heatsink compound to fill the gap. At least now I know my chip is being properly cooled. And because of the way the fan is connected I can now monitor it's speed and funtion.

So rdnzl if you have the tools and the time I'd suggest something similar. Any heatsink will be better than not having one. Silicon doesn't dissipate heat like metal will. It will help out in the long run.

It seems like the heatsink that was under the fan, in combination with my card cooler aimed right at it keeps it from over heating.

It is some sort of heatsink anyway.
I've been running it this way for over a week now with no problems, and I play a lot of games..

LOL ... nice horn, Greebe !!!

Did you cover it with flies' fence to avoid 'choppy' graphics ?

                ...

                Now seriously, Greebe.

with that kinda cooling you should be able to clock it pretty high ... how far can you go ?

                Cheers,

I just received and installed my Tennmax BGA (type B) cooler for my MAX. Very quiet and seems to cool well, no lockups.

The weak point of the cooler is the provided attachment pins. They are plastic and don't have any provision for spring tension to maintain pressure between the G400 chip and the heatsink. (They also break easily). I removed the pins (and springs) that were on the original MAX cooler and installed them on the Tennmax cooler. They work fine.

The Tennmax cooler comes with a thin pad to be used instead of heatsink paste. I left it on (no paste) and so far so good.

I think this is a worthwhile modification for $19. Quieted my system a bit. The original cooler was from a MAX bought in July of last year. Still worked, only noisy.
