  • G400Max - best drivers?, install order?

    Hello,
I am receiving a new 800 MHz Intel system next week with a G400Max (Asus P3B-F BX mobo) and am looking for suggestions as to which Win98SE drivers I should install (I would like to be able to run Quake3, UT, Half-life) I am going to be installing the OS myself and need suggestions on the order in which I should install the software - should I use DirectX 7.0a (and at what point)? Also, in the installation process, when should I install my voodoo2 card? Thanks.

Well you really can install them in any order with a BX system, it's really straight forward...
BUT, if you wanna be sure install DX7a before the Matrox drivers, use the latest 5.52...
once installed your good to go..
Since you have a V2, you Cannot install the TurboGL, as they don't work well together, basically they just don't work at all ;o)

I'd say install your V2 after the G400..
and then do the normal installs for your game software...

I'd say don't install the Voodoo2 at all, unless there are glide only games that you want to play. That rig will run your Max very VERY well with the latest (5.52) drivers. I would also bypass on the turboGL for most OGL games, 'cept mabe Q3 and Tribes. The regular ICD in 5.52 does fine on it's own...

If you really, really need to use your Voodoo II (for Glide) and are worried about conflicts with the G400 TurboGL, use a V2 driver which allows you to completely disable it for Direct 3D and you should then be O.K.

If there are "glide only" games that you really must play. You could also try a "Glide Emulator". With a system that fast the G400Max can do the "emulation" through DirectX every bit as fast as the V2 can do it "natively".

My point is if you install the Voodoo 2 it will degrade the image quality of your desktop at any decent resolution. It was better with the V2 than the original Voodoo. But that "pass-through" cable still has the same effect.

Please! At least take a good close look at how things, like small letters at high resolution, appear before you install the V2. Then you'll understand what you're giving up!

well if he Must have the V2 and doesn't want the horrible effects that the Pass-through has on display quality... then just get a Set of BNC cables to your Monitor...
This way you get an Even Cleaner signal to your Monitor from the G400, and use the Sub-D directly into the monitor for the V2...
Most monitors have a SubD/BNC switch on the front so it's Easy as pie ;o)

But as many have said above, I'd make sure you really need that V2 ;o)

V2's will work, but you may want to make sure you rename/move the V2's OpenGL ICD that gets installed. I've done it before for GLide support. I didn't use passthroughs. You don't need them for the V2 - just run the output of the V2 to the second input on your monitor (you do have two inputs, right?).

You CAN use the TGL w/ the V2 installed. You just have to be smart about how you install it. I had Half-Life's OpenGL driver menu set up to choose from the Default, the 3dfx MiniGL (get the latest one), and the TGL 1.3, at one point. TGL's one file. Cancel the installation when it starts after reboot, use the manager to install the file to ONE game's directory, then grab a copy of the file and put it into the root directory of the games that need it.

TurboGL doesn't have as may artifacts as the ICD does. There is a noticeable difference in HL between TurboGL 1.3 and the ICD. Use the TGL. You also cannot use the ICD when more than one Display Adapter is in the system. You either have to disable the display via the Display Control Panel, or disable it in the Device Manager.

The V2 will look butt-ugly compared to the G400 MAX's output (I've put them up side-by side and compared). If you don't have two V2's SLIed, the performance of a single V2 will barely warrant its installation in the system. However, a V2 SLI rig will perform better than a G400 in games like UT and HL -a V2 SLI rig hold a higher sustained framerate than the G400 MAX in games like UT and Half-Life.

Well the latest drivers available today seem to be the 5.53.017 ones. They work good for me and are slightly faster than the 5.52.015 ones!

                regards

Well yes they actually are from GigaByte but they seem to work well. I installed them after removing the 5.52.015 ones and got slightly higher performance especially in D3D! Maybe it's just me but try em and let me know whether or not they give you better results!
