I had a funny thought today. The mobile market is all abuzz about ATI's Rage Mobilitly chipset. This kinda makes me sick since ATI, in my view, hasn't produced a decent product in years and has NEVER written good drivers for any of their cards. SO I got to thinking; ATI seems to be heading towards dominating the laptop market just because they're one of the few chipsets that can be 3d accelerated on laptops. Laptop buyers are typically used to 2d-only S3 Virge type video in their laptops. So what I was wondering is this: why doesn't Matrox get their noses in there? Couldn't the G400 be altered to consume less power? If it isn't a power hog to begin with (a la GeForce), this sounds "relatively" simple on paper. I would jump all over a Matrox-powered laptop. Hell even a modified G200 would be top-of-class for laptops right now. We can't let a rotten foolish company like ATI be successful when there's room for better companies like Matrox in there.
Anyone from Matrox care to comment?
