  • DVD & g400

I had a g200 and dvd playing was not very good, so I went for a new g400 32Mb and sadly it makes no difference, when it's supposed to be (acording to matrox guyz) a tad faster.
    Doesn't it have MC?
Is it normal for my system ?
    Should I buy a new machine :/ ?

    My specs:

    K6II 400 128 Mb. Epox VIA MPV3 chipset.
    G400 32Mb Dualhead
    SB 16 (ISA) <- (guilty?)

What OS, driver, and DVD software are you using? Kinda hard to answer any questions when you don't give any relevant information.

I'm using Win2k, 5.03 with my MAX, WinDVD 1.something (not WinDVD 2000) and it works just fine for me on an Abit BM6 with a Celeron 400@500. Don't have problems running on screen or using DualHead. Not sure about that board/chipset, though, or even K6 performance on DVD's.

Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow? But why put off until tomorrow what you can put off altogether?

There are (reportedly) a number of software upgrades that are necessary for your MB. Search this Forum and you will get numerous discussions on how to set up VIA MBs.

Also, be sure DMA transfers are enabled for the DVD-ROM drive.

You didn't specify what resolution and color depth you are trying to view DVDs at. Don't expect good performance at 1280x1024 with 32-bit color. You should get a reasonably smooth picture at 800x600x32. 24-bit color is not accelerated so don't use that color depth. Be sure you don't have alot of stuff running in the background. Your CPU doesn't have alot of headroom for other processes.

Use the DVD genie and change the decodeing level to basic quality. The K6-2/400 isn't fast enough for anything better in win98. My K6-2 @506 will stutter during high movement scenes with pc quality. A drop to 16 bit color will help a lot also. My K6-3/450 at full quality with all other programs shut down, running 16 bit color uses about 70% of the processor power.
