I *doubted* Via. I said no no no. But ... but.. i'm a moron. And I tried it anyways.

Tried agpapertursize64mb128mb, disablewritecombine, deleteviagart.vxd, GOD HELP ME!

I have been sucked into the masses with the little "\//\" logo branded on their forehead, walking around like a zombie muttering 'we connect. we connect.'

Can someone please help me before I propel myself through a plate glass window in so much action-movie style?

Ami, the 5.5X drivers don't really like VIA and visa versa. Try PD 5.41 and if that doesn't work, try 5.30.

On a seperate driver related note. My experience with the 4.02 AGP drivers has been, um.... hmmm, I'm trying to think of a polite way to say this, but there isn't, so, my experience has been F***ing miserable.

The VIA 4.02 drivers don't seem to be compatable with VIA chipsets(now how f'ed up is that?)

Ok, maybe it's juts me that is having that much trouble. At any rate try the 4.00 AGP drivers, I think they are a part of the 4.18 and 4.19 driver packs.(If you can't find them email me and let me know, I have both of them floating around somewhere).

Yeah, I'm just crying a lot and having random fits of tremors and spasms now.

Taming the Beast, Well, I kind of had that in mind - if I ever get there. So yeah, there will be an article coming out of this. An entertaining one. Illustrated, even, with photos.

Send me a GeForce, huh. From what I hear (?) NVidia doesn't play well with Via AT ALL... Otherwise I'd go get a GeForce GTS and delegate my still-well-behaved G400 to my P3/500 system.

I'm just wondering if I'm beginning to get the VIA "experience" here; Get it working for a day, decide to change out a component two months down the road and be right back to square one.

Maybe they'll just fix everything, huh?

What AGP driver are you using? Have you experimented with any of the busmastering drivers?

After a couple of days of complete chaos, they seem to have settled on a new set of 4in1's and have posted a new AGP driver as well (ver. 4.03). Strangely enough, they didn't update the AGP driver in the new 4in1 set, so you have to download and install it separately.

Well, the Via busmaster drivers seem to be working okay, I don't really know if the W98SE drivers are going to end up being faster... I'm almost afraid to try.

My 3082 3dmarks on an Athlon 900 is kinda poopy though.

I just had this computer on wednesday.

I downloaded Via 4-1 4.20 right away cuz I knew there where problems with the K7V and the G400 MAX.

I also flashed my bios to ver 1006A

I didn't have any major problems as of yet but the 5.52 don't work!

I ran into many problems with the Win9x 5.5 drivers and my G200 on a Via133. I don't know if you'd consider this to be a solution, but ever since I switched to Win2000 I haven't had any problems at all.

I've heard that I shouldn't even -think- of going to Win2k with a VIA chipset, it's like, not possible.

I think i'm gonna try it on a dual boot though, just a'cos.

Win2k runs ok, make sure you have the viaagp.sys file. Unzip it to your winnt/windows32 directory before installing your video drivers.

I haven't had problems with any version of video driver on my k7v, except quake3, which crashes at the menu on 5.52 and above, I copy the 5.41 g400icd.dll file into my quake3 directory and all problems cease to exist. TurboGL has never worked either. (no big loss)

Make sure the IO voltage jumper is set to 3.3v, I know all the early boards shipped at 3.41v, and I've found this the cause for my G400Max to be unstable at agp2x

AGP drivers 3.97, 4.00, 4.02 all worked well. havn't gotten around to 4.03 yet.

Noticed a large performance decrease when I set my AGP aperature to 256 mb in the BIOS. 128 works the best for me.

That's all the performance tweaks I can remember for now. As a guide, I get a little over 3000 3dmarks on my 550@721 (700 at a 103mhz fsb)

Also, I'm a little unsure if it's something else I messed with, but has anywone else noticed the 1006 bios is a little less stable overclocking than previous (1005) versions? I once got 781 out of this cpu...
