Will upgrading cpu 450 ---> 900+ increase g400 performance

hi, just wondering will upgrading my current cel300A@450 with an PIII 933@??? increase performance of my G400MAX. I mainly play Counterstrike at 1024*768 (with fps fluctuating 25-72(as seen with netgraph on).

does the G400max scale well with cpu on high resolutions?

You will definetly see some improvements with the Max, but don't expect to much. IMO the Max is outscaled at every processor running above 850Mhz.

Yea - I don't see the 933 boosting performance of the Max as such - but in low res gaming (ie CPU limited) a faster CPU will make a difference.

And am I right in thinking that you plan to overclock your 933? I can't see any major gains to be had from this chip - you'll save a lot by going for a 700 and try to hit 933 with that (or if you've got good components (well you must have - your at the murc!) go for a lower multiplier and up the FSB some more.

a few months ago I went from a cellery 300A @ 450 to a Pentium III 450, and all my framerates went up a little, that was my last celeron I ever bought, now I'm stickin' with P3's or whatever comes next

Moleman, you are unfair, can you even compare the price of a celerom 300a to a PII450 ???

besides Moleman, the reason for the better performance was the addition of SSE. All new celerons include SSE...believe me, if they didnt I wouldve spent a little more and gotten a PIII

And yes you may see an improvement in framerates. Even with my vanilla G400 clocked at 140/185, I saw my 800x600x32 framerate in q3a demo001 jump from 45 to 57 fps. I can now play at 800x600x32 online without it ever getting choppy! And this was on an upgrade from a celery 450 to a 533@896MHz

Despite of other opinions, you will double or even triple your performance when updating your OCed Celery to a Coppermine.

I just upgraded from my former Celeron333@500 to a Cel566@875 and my 3D Mark 2000 score went from +1800 to +3000 in 1024x768x16bppx16bZ ...

Go ahead and figure for yourself.

I went from a P3-550 to a P3-750 Coppermine. I didn't get a huge boost. Well, I'm not sure, I never had the time to do any benchmarks. I run Half-Life at 800x600 because at 1024x768 in multiplayer, my fps sometime goes down to 10!

From what I know, the G400 scales to about 800-900MHz. So you might as well just get something like a P3-800.

Hey I was just stating that I think the P3 is worth the extra cash, not that the celeron is bad cpu or anything.
All my previous PCs had Celerons in them, and I always was happy with the performance, but now that I can afford a little more I'm stickin with P3's. And if you can afford a P3 933 then why buy a celeron instead?

I'm running a PIII 800E with a G400 Max (no overclocking of the Max). I saw an nice increase in fram rates moving from a PIII 600 to the PIII 800E but I only see a 3FPS increase in overclocking my 800E to 908MHZ.

The PIII 933 is pretty maxed out already as far as overclocking goes.....might be better to save a little cash and overclock a PIII 733 or 800.

I've had my 800E running stable at 960MHZ with the voltage boosted abit but because I'm not seeing any large increase in frame rates I clocked it back to 908MHZ at default voltage and it's rock solid.

Upgrading to a CPU that uses Intel's SIMD instructions will result in a massive performance boost. Matrox's OpenGL driver is heavily optimized to use these instructions.
