When all of you say that TGL wont work with drivers above 5.30 what kind of error do you get?
I installed Q3demo just to check this out (I've got glquake and that works with the ICD in both W98 and W2K using 5.52/5.03 (although without sound in W2K but I can't really blame that on Matrox), TGL wont detect it for installation) and all I got was a big white! screen , it looked exactly the same using TGL/ICD in W98 or ICD in W2K.

So what should I expect ? And how do I get to se the log Q3 prints in the quickly disappearing window with blue background ?

i thought my problems were well known, but they doesn't seem to be. so here it is:

these problems appear when using 5.41 and above and TGL 1.3/1.0:

      - with via-gart installed, all possible agp-apert.sizes :

      ICD:
      - quake3 hangs after id-logo
      - half-life hangs up unregularly

      TGL:
      - q3 hangs on famous white screen
      - hl hangs on level init.

      - with via-gart de-installed:

      agp-apert. 256mb:
      - all games run FINE
      - hangs on SHUT-DOWN with mouse-pointer freezed

      agp-apert. 16mb:
      - windows shuts down properly
      - q3, hl run FINE
      - most direct3d-games DON'T start

The TNT2/G200 comparison on a VIA board just isn't fair. The TNT2 is a G400-class card. In fact in some resolutions it outperformed the G400, and still does.

It's not so much that nVidia has these great driver writers. It's more that they have had several years to perfect the card. How old is the TNT1 now? The TNT2, and to some extent the GeForce, is just a warmed-over TNT.

The G400 is different enough from the G200 that Matrox couldn't do the same with drivers. They have had to maintain two separate driver bases for two separate products. And the fact that they're still supporting the older product is quite commendable. Look at ATI - they haven't updated their Rage PRO drivers in a year or more. And they're not EVER going to support their newest card under Win2k. How silly is that?

I would also try to get running stable at 400 first rather than 450.

You should not have 2 IRQ holders for one device.
Boot into safe mode, and look at you device manager for duplicate or errant devices. Remove all errents, and both copies of any doubles, and let windows redect the proper hardware when you reboot into normal mode.

i removed all irq-steering entries in safe-mode. when restarting in normal mode win98se detects 3 or 4 irq-steerings, and there is only one for the g400, but after a second reboot there are 2 for irq 11 again!!!

I'm not sayinng it IS, but it COULD be.

Let me give you an example that I have been dealing with this past week...

I switched out my mobo from a P2B to a BH6. When I did that, I removed all devices from device manager before switching (or so I thought), so Windows could redetect everything. Obviously, I missed an IDE controller. So basically, I had double IDE controllers in device manager (but in normal mode I would only see one copy of it). My system has been unbearably unstable in this time. Random lockups in any D3D, and even at my desktop.
Last night, I weeded out the duplicate entries, and let windows redect the correct one. When I went to work this morning, I left the PC running 3dmark2k running loops. When I went home at lunchtime, it was still running (before removing the duplicate, I was lucky if I got a single loop out of it).

So yes....errant or duplicate devices (that only show up in safe mode) CAN cause big time problems...

You removed the IRQ steerings, but not what was causing the extra IRQ steering to show up. Check ALL devices in safe mode for duplicate entries...

No that's not the reason for your problems.
                          However it helps.
Deleting viagart.vxd does allow for game play, however, like you,I also get a BSOD when shutting down.
The workaround is to reinstall it in safemode.
I know this is a drag, but if you have a ss7 board that shows this problem,it's the only workaround I can come up with.
                          Deleting and reinstalling,or uninstall,re-install.
Hence the concept of a BAT.file that loads one driver(tgl),but excludes viagart.vxd
That would be cool, just launch it in a dos window and load your game!
I wish someone with more DOS knowledge could lend a hand.

With viagart.vxd deleted pcilist showed agp enabled 2x.TGL in quakeII worked.
                              Others reported QuakeIII worked.
                              AGP functions correctly without it.
The problem can arise with BSOD when shutting down.
What 2 irq steerings indicate is that there may be a phantom device,Kruzin didn't mean delete pci steering, but rather if there's a phantom device,(ie.2 video cards listed,2 sound cards,2 monitors, etc.)remove that phantom device while in safe mode.
If 2 matrox cards are listed, remove both and let windows redetect the right one!
