What can I expect of my g400 MAX overclock wise?

Greetings.

I have read a lot of the discussions presented in this board. Since I have changed to the latest PD, I can no longer use matrox overclocking utility.

I therefore want to change my bios, using the advice stated in previous post about changing the pins.

SInce my MAX card is allready a bit "Overclock" by matrox them selves, i was wondering what performance increases I can expect. I have not added extra cooling to the G400 card, but my cabinet is heavily cooled.

BTW. I have a PIII @820MHz. Can the G400 deliver any more than it does?

I also have g400 max on a Athlon 750 system and currently using pdesk 5.25 with mgatweak. It works fine and by optimizing the SGRAM i get extra few hundred points on 3dmark2000 benchmark program. i did not tweak on the clockspeed since i don't think i have adequate cooling.

I have had three MAXs. One would only oc to +5% or so. Two of the three will oc to +20% (240 MHz)

welcome to the place to ask those things ...

First, the MAX is not only an OCed Vanilla G400. It is clocked higher because it has 5ns RAM instead of 6ns RAM on the Vanillas. Further it had to pass certain quality checks before getting the MAX label, if it fails those I guess the sell it 'underclocked' as a Vanilla G400 wiht 5ns RAM ...

OCing your G400 (MAX or not) does give you better performance when your CPU is strong enough to deliver more data. Your fairly high OCed P3 should have enough juice to show you the gain when you do several benchmarks for comparison.

For quick and easy tests you can still use powerstrip, as it offers the drag'n'slide option too ...

Look slike you found the peak for your RAM ...

If you'd try MGA Tweak, you could use different dividers for the main PLL and possibly could get your core frequency even higher ...

Additional cooling also helps in the higher clocking ranks.

I use quake III timedemo 1 as a benchmark.

Apparently I can overclock (using poverstrip) to around 214/160MHz.

Any higher, and the MAX will start to texelate in q3. Does this seem right?

It did give me 10% higher framerates in q3. =)
