  • Save your old drivers: Macrovision Backdoor will be closed

A moment of silence for the demise of Matrox's Macrovision backdoor.

Unfortunately, the "Display Properties" method of disabling Macrovision has been officially identified as a bug...which means Matrox will have to close this loophole in a future driver release.

Read this idiot's thread over on the T.S. forum here:
    http://forum.matrox.com/mgaforum/For...ML/000262.html

Our friends in T.S. ain't happy about it, but that, unfortunately, is the law.

Add RPC2 DVD to the mix (Hardware region locking), there will be much misery and confusion in the coming product cycle over DVD movies and desktop video.

My advice: Save your old drivers, and buy a non RPC2 DVD deck NOW. The newer ones are gonna be a real pain thanks to MPAA.

You can get a list of RPC2 'compliant' decks here:
    http://forum.matrox.com/mgaforum/For...ML/000332.html

Saad has posted the models to avoid toward the bottom of the thread.

Feel free to move this over to DTV Kenny, if I'm off topic--but more folks watch this forum.

yeah... I've seen his post lately.. how stupid things can a man say?

Everyone interested in removing macrovision protection only needs to search the web, and should find this way within 5 minutes.. soon not any more... thanks to this guy.

But I am positive that there will be a new 'bug' in the next generation drivers.. something like centerwindow disabling the macrovision when a movie is opened...

    - What do you get when you put N nVidia whores in a circle and each one pats the person on their right on the back and says "nVidia wins 3dfx and Michael Knight any day of the week!" ?

    - You get N people with a boosted ego, and no-one loses anything; keep up the good work, boys!

Amazing ... in his first post on the board, he managed to piss the whole world off. Too bad Haig couldn't have quietly deleted his post before it became an issue. Is it too late?

Too late: Haig's hands are tied. Once it can be proven that they have knowlege of a "feature" like this, MPAA can go after them if they don't fix it.

Just wait 'till customers start locking up their shiny new DVD units. The latest evil is these RPC2 DVD player/components that lock themselves internally (inside the player) after a set number of region changes. Then you gotta crack 'em--then your warranty is screwed.
