Need help with my MAX's FAN! (how embarrassing;))

The fan on my max is starting get noisy again. (I oiled it once)
Is there a way to get a new fan without having to send the whole card back to matrox?
It is the metal bladed kind, so I would like to take care of it before the blade flies off and shorts something out.

I replaced mine with Tennmax:

Works fine. I replaced the pins in the Tennmax fan with those from the Matrox fan. I liked them better - spring tension

Though it is a thought.

Nope WD-40 in the end of a pencil point.
Just peal back the paper label on the fan and apply about 1/10 of a drop.

If you want to lubricate, don't use WD-40. It is a poor lubricant. Try sewing machine oil. Comes in a small container, but is really high-quality stuff.

Also, take the fan/heatsink apart and lub the other bearing on the other side of the fan. You might keep from buying a replacement that way.

I guess I'm using a strange way to cool my vanilla, I've got something like this

although mine has a fan in the middle, not that... whatever it is.
Initially I bought it to help the CPU, but after I got my G400 it didn't fit between the video card and CPU anymore, so now it takes the space of the first PCI slot and helps my vanilla

I've got solution for you man!!!
Leave the heat-sink alone and replace only the fan.
I did it and I love it!
I got the best best I found that could fit to the 40mm max's heat-sink.
I bought it from 2cooltek.com

Specs:
Model #: KD1204PKB2

- 0.9 watt
- 6400 RPM
- 6.8 CFM
- 29 dba
and it's 3pin for you can watch your eyes on the rpm!
P.s put some thermenal paste between the heatsink and the chip this will help for cooling.

P.s 2 I also bought a little grill that fit this baby-fan and it looks so cool!

P.s3 the only thing i ated in this little mod i did was to find the corect screws, pain in the ass!!!

I thought the little heatsink and fan combo on the MAX were all one unit. Are you sure your not refering to the big heatsink on the vanilla G400?????

I had to find wider screws to attach a fan on my wife's vanilla G400 because of the wide and tapered spaces in that heatsink.

The vannilla and the max have the same heatsink don't they?
The maxes fan is separate from the heat sink on mine.
Just held on by screws. I have a couple of 486 fans but they don't quite fit.

Here's the close-up and this shows the 4 screws that Dr. Matrox is refering to.
So, you can replace just the fan on the MAX heatsink with a better one (40mm X 40mm). Too bad the original heatsink is kind of wimpy.


I think the original MAX fan is 10mm thick. The one Dr. Matrox got is 20mm thick, so he had to find longer screws. So like he said, it must be cooling much better than the smaller 10mm thick fan.

Not so easy, as I've found out as of lately, for my screws fall out, even when I bend the fins even further. I should get bigger (wider?) screws as well, before the screws fall out when my PC is on
Why couldn't the GPU be on the up-side of the videocard, instead of (as it is now) on the under-side?
